Prince William And Kate Middleton's College Apartment Is Still Available To Rent

During their second year at university, Prince William and Kate Middleton moved in together—as friends. In fall 2002, William and Kate moved into 13A Hope Street, an off campus apartment with their friends Fergus Boyd and Olivia Bleasdale.

Here's everything you need to know about their experience as roommates.

Their landlady almost didn't approve their application.

Landlady Charlotte Smith said she had a "no boys" policy, recounting in 2013, "We'd had an unfortunate experience with some boys in the flat once before and we were determined not to have young men there again. Broken furniture, broken windows – there was a lot of damage, so that put us off really. I said to this young lady we’d really rather not have more boys and she said, 'What if I were to tell you that it was Prince William?'"

Smith said she was still hesitant, but decided to talk to her husband and decide. "My husband and I discussed it and he talked me round," she said. "We were really quite surprised that they should choose my flat, but it was very nice with ample living space in the centre of town and it had the reputation for being one of the best flats for comfort in St Andrews. We wanted to talk it over with our neighbours and they were all right with it. So we decided we would go ahead and let the flat to Prince William."

Smith said William and Kate were "ideal tenants." She said, "We arranged to meet Kate Middleton, Fergus and Olivia before they moved in but we thought we’d better not ask to see Prince William because we thought his credit rating must be quite good. But he insisted on meeting us."

They paid £400 per month each in rent.

They moved in together as friends, but soon started dating.

"We moved in together as friends because we were living together, we lived with a couple of others as well, it just sort of blossomed from there really," William said in their engagement interview. "We just saw more of each other, hung out a bit more and did stuff."

Soon, their friendship blossomed into a romance. Their flatmates Fergus and Olivia, William said, "were a bit surprised that it had happened, then they realized it was really nice and it was good fun and we got on really well, they were good friends of ours as well so we had a good giggle with them as well."

William would cook for Kate.

William would cook dinners for Kate in their apartment. She recalled, "He did cook for me quite a bit at university, and he would always come with a bit of angst and a bit of anger if something had gone wrong and I would have to wander in and save something that was going."

William said, "When I was trying to impress Kate I was trying to cook these amazing fancy dinners and what would happen was I would burn something, something would overspill, something would catch on fire and she would be sitting in the background trying to help, and basically taking control of the whole situation, so I was quite glad she was there at the time."

The home is still available for rent.

13A Hope Street at St. Andrews is "one of the most sought after locations for students in St Andrews," the current management company writes. "It is a spacious family house retaining many original features, such as ornate plaster work, fine woodwork, picture rails and large sash windows. There is one bathroom, with bath and a further shower room." The current rate is £3,875/month.
