Prince Harry And Meghan Markle Give Back On MLK Day

For Martin Luther King Day, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle chose to give back. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex helped honour the life of the famed minister and activist by supporting staff and volunteers at The King Center in Atlanta, a spokesperson for the couple confirms to BAZAAR.com.

Harry and Meghan marked the day by helping Martin Luther King Jr.’s daughter Dr. Bernice King, arranging meals to be provided to those organising events at the centre, which was founded by King’s family after his 1968 assassination.

Local Black-owned food trucks served free lunches to those on-site who helped organise a number of events throughout Monday, January 17, including a voter registration and education drive, and a service project to gather donations for unsheltered and homeless people in Atlanta.

Paige’s Pastries & Bistro and Parlay Savory Saloon parked up outside The King Center for Nonviolent Social Change to offer a mix of foods, from chilli bowls and tacos to peach cobbler and cinnamon cream pound cake.

After the Sussexes’ donation, Bernice King wrote in a tweet, 'I’m so grateful for your graciousness in honouring my father.'

Commemorative events on the day also included an annual service for MLK Day with keynote speaker Bishop Michael Curry, who gave the sermon at Harry and Meghan’s wedding ceremony in 2018.

'We often ask ourselves how the life and legacy of people like the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. remain relevant in our current moment, and it would be difficult to overstate how much we need King’s prophetic witness right now,' Curry said in a written statement. 'From his tireless advocacy for the right of all Americans to vote, to his model of faith animating nonviolent work for justice, King calls us to continue his work—and to truly labor for the realisation of God’s Beloved Community.'
