The countdown to the King’s Coronation is officially on, and all eyes will soon be on London and Windsor, where the festivities are scheduled to take place.

King Charles III, previously known as Prince Charles, will officially become the Monarch following his coronation on May 6, 2023.

According to a press statement shared with ELLE UK and other media outlets, King Charles' Coronation 'will reflect the monarch’s role today and look towards the future, while being rooted in longstanding traditions and pageantry'.

'The Coronation is a solemn religious service, together with an occasion for celebration and pageantry,' a statement read. 'The Ceremony has retained a similar structure for over a thousand years, and next year’s Coronation is expected to include the same core elements while recognising the spirit of our times.'

The Coronation comes months after Charles became King, following Queen Elizabeth II’s passing in September 2022. When the Queen ascended the throne in 1952, her coronation likewise didn’t take place for several months, until June 2, 1953.

Details about King Charles’ forthcoming coronation are slowly being released to the public. So far, we know that the coronation service will be conducted by the Archbishop of Canterbury, there will be a special Coronation Concert at Windsor Castle, with several thousand pairs of tickets to be made available via public ballot, and the public will be invited to celebrate at home with a Coronation Big Lunch, and are encouraged to invite neighbours and communities to share in the fun and frivolity together across the country.

In the lead up to the big day, our attention however, is increasingly more concerned with the King’s Coronation procession, from where it’ll start and end, to which members of the royal family will take part.

Here’s everything we know about the King’s Coronation procession:

According to the Royal.uk website, their Majesties The King and The Queen Consort, Camilla, will arrive at Westminster Abbey in procession from Buckingham Palace. The route is expected to involve them traveling along the Royal Route to the Abbey, and on the way back pass by Whitehall to Trafalgar Square, along to Pall Mall, Hyde Park Corner, Marble Arch, Oxford Circus, and head back down the Mall to end at Buckingham Palace, as per the Queen’s Coronation route.

‘After the Service, Their Majesties will return to Buckingham Palace in a larger ceremonial procession, known as “The Coronation Procession”. Their Majesties will be joined in this procession by other Members of the Royal Family,’ it adds.

In March 2023, the Times reported that all three of the Prince of Wales’s children – Princes George and Louis, and Princess Charlotte. are expected to take part in the King’s Coronation procession at Westminster Abbey, which is estimated to be around a third of the size of the Queen’s Coronation procession.

‘Although the children’s presence has not been confirmed by Kensington Palace, documents show that after processing out of the abbey, they are expected to join their parents in a carriage behind the King and Queen, who will be in the Gold State Coach,’ the Times reported.

‘The children of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, have not yet been invited to the coronation, The Times understands.’

According to the publication, rehearsal plans show that neither Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, nor the Duke of York (Prince Andrew), Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie will be part of the procession.

‘Apart from the Prince and Princess of Wales and their children, the only other royals in the procession out of the abbey will be the Princess Royal and her husband, Vice Admiral Sir Tim Laurence, the new Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh, the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester, and the Duke of Kent and his sister Princess Alexandra,’ it added.

Following the Coronation procession, the Royal.uk website notes: ‘At Buckingham Palace, The King and The Queen Consort, accompanied by Members of the Royal Family, will appear on the balcony to conclude the day’s ceremonial events.’
