Prince Charles Might Cancel Plans to Give Meghan and Harry Clarence House When He’s King

Today in eye-roll-inducing royal family drama, Prince Charles reportedly might cancel plans to give Prince Harry and Meghan Markle Clarence House once he becomes king. According to The Express, Charles moved into Clarence House after the Queen Mother died in 2002, and it’s previously been reported that he’d be giving the property to Meghan and Harry.

However, in the wake of ongoing family tension and the Sussexes’ move to California, it looks like Clarence House going to them is “no longer on the cards.”

The Daily Mail explains that the home is “now more likely to be saved for Prince George, Princess Charlotte, or Prince Louis,” although apparently, the property’s “outdated decor is a turn-off for younger royals” so it’ll likely undergo renovations. As a source tells the outlet, “No one is terribly fond of Clarence House because it’s still seen very much as the Queen Mother’s place.”

This news comes amid reports that Prince Charles is planning to majorly scale down the monarchy once he’s king, including their properties. According to Daily Mail sources, he wants to turn Balmoral into a museum, move Kate Middleton and Prince William into Windsor Castle, and give the public more access to Buckingham Palace.

“The Prince of Wales strongly believes that these places have got to deliver something for the public beyond just being somewhere for members of the royal family to live. Everything is seen through the lens of the question: ‘What value is this offering to the public?’” the source said. “Everybody recognizes it makes no sense to run so many residences, but if you give them up entirely, you will never get them back when Prince George and the younger royals grow up and need somewhere to live.”
