The USA TODAY Editorial Board decided to bring in expert voices from the left and right to assess President Biden's performance.

The idea is to start a conversation about whether or not Biden has been effective in some of the biggest themes and issues facing the country.

Almost one year into Biden's presidency, his approval rating has plummeted to a new low of 38%, according to a USA TODAY/Suffolk University poll released this month.

Biden is a boring president. That's OK.

By David Rothkopf

"History is a blind taste test when it comes to the va-va-voom of presidents. It really only cares about results. Do you have any sense of how “exciting” Grover Cleveland was? Or Benjamin Harrison?

In fact, many of our most highly regarded presidents were not, for example, considered great speakers – from George Washington and Thomas Jefferson to Dwight Eisenhower. There are abundant examples from history however of shining political stars of their moment who were not so great when it came to governing."

Biden's failures continue to mount as Americans suffer

By Katrina Trinko

"A President Joe Biden, we were told, would be a moderate president, one who could unite Americans and competently lead our nation.

Talk about fake news.

Ten months into the Biden presidency, it’s clear that he is neither moderate nor, despite decades in Washington as a senator and vice president, competent. "

Biden's withdrawal from Afghanistan was a strategic failure

By Seth G. Jones

"President Joe Biden promised during his election campaign to end the U.S. military involvement in Afghanistan. While he kept that commitment, the United States paid a steep price.

The U.S. withdrawal was poorly planned and executed. It led to the death of 13 U.S. service members, jettisoned democracy in Afghanistan, wiped out hard-won progress on women’s rights and increased the terrorism threat from al-Qaida, the Islamic State and other groups."

Biden's immigration policies fail families

By Taylor Levy

"Contrary to his promises, Biden has kept one of the Trump administration’s worst policies on the books: Title 42, which, against the advice of medical experts, uses the pandemic as an excuse to violate human rights law and expel asylum-seekers to Mexico and their home countries, including thousands of Haitians.

He is also planning to restart the “Remain in Mexico” program, which forces migrants to stay in Mexico while their asylum cases are pending.

These are no longer Trump policies. This is Biden’s immigration legacy, too."

Biden must help Americans struggling to pay for rent, gas, groceries

By Elaine C. Kamarck

"President Joe Biden can get his presidency back on track, particularly as it relates to the economy. He has time. One year until midterm elections and three years until the next presidential election is a lifetime in politics.

But Biden needs to focus on the things average Americans care about: the increasing costs of living in this country."

Biden showed leadership during COVID, but we still need a strategy

Dr. Céline R. Gounder

"When the Biden administration came into office in January, plans for a robust COVID-19 vaccine rollout lagged. What the administration accomplished over its first six months in office was nothing short of a miracle: working to stabilize vaccine production and getting shots in arms.

Since then, nearly 60% of the U.S. population has been fully vaccinated. That’s remarkable progress, but what’s still missing is a vision and public health strategy for what our new normal with COVID-19 will look like and how we’ll live with it."
