Aerospace suppliers scramble to cushion blow of looming Trump tariffs
Canadian helicopter parts supplier Optima Aero is already moving inventory south of the border to minimize the risk from potential tariffs proposed by U.S. President Donald Trump. Optima, headquartered in Quebec, sends about $2 million worth of parts each year to Texas, where its local division provides maintenance services for local law enforcement and U.S. border protection, a priority mission for Trump's administration. "A tariff on Canada would make it tough to keep that business," said Optima President Toby Gauld, who estimates 6% of the Montreal-area company's $32 million in annual revenue could be subject to tariffs.

As elite Davos event ends, some hail 'constructive optimism' despite divisions, suffering in world
The European Central Bank's president responded Friday to U.S. President Donald Trump’s accusation of unfair trade treatment by the European Union by calling for negotiations and mutual respect rather than a focus purely on trans-Atlantic trade figures. The comments by Christine Lagarde alluding to a U.S.-EU rift offered a fitting final note at the World Economic Forum's weeklong meeting: Trump's return to the White House on Monday was on everyone's lips, overshadowing traditional Davos talk about issues like climate change, free trade and economic development.

Syria cancels port management contract with Russian firm, sources say
Syria's new ruling administration has cancelled a contract with a Russian firm to manage and operate the country's Tartous port that was signed under former President Bashar al-Assad, according to three Syrian businessmen and media reports. Syrian government spokespeople either said they could not confirm the reports, or did not respond to requests for comment. Semi-official Syrian newspaper Al-Watan on Thursday quoted the head of Tartous customs, Riad Joudy, as saying that the investment contract had been annulled after the Russian firm, STG Stroytransgaz, failed to fulfil the terms of the 2019 deal, which included investments in infrastructure.
