Possible bearish signals as Crown Castle Inc. (NYSE:CCI) insiders disposed of US$3.7m worth of stock

Over the past year, many Crown Castle Inc. (NYSE:CCI) insiders sold a significant stake in the company which may have piqued investors' interest. Knowing whether insiders are buying is usually more helpful when evaluating insider transactions, as insider selling can have various explanations. However, if numerous insiders are selling, shareholders should investigate more.

While insider transactions are not the most important thing when it comes to long-term investing, we would consider it foolish to ignore insider transactions altogether.

The Last 12 Months Of Insider Transactions At Crown Castle

Over the last year, we can see that the biggest insider sale was by the Executive VP & COO of Fiber, Christopher Levendos, for US$2.1m worth of shares, at about US$193 per share. While insider selling is a negative, to us, it is more negative if the shares are sold at a lower price. The silver lining is that this sell-down took place above the latest price (US$150). So it may not shed much light on insider confidence at current levels.

Insider Ownership Of Crown Castle

I like to look at how many shares insiders own in a company, to help inform my view of how aligned they are with insiders. I reckon it's a good sign if insiders own a significant number of shares in the company. Crown Castle insiders own about US$361m worth of shares (which is 0.6% of the company). This kind of significant ownership by insiders does generally increase the chance that the company is run in the interest of all shareholders.

So What Does This Data Suggest About Crown Castle Insiders?

It is good to see the recent insider purchase. However, the longer term transactions are not so encouraging. Overall, we'd prefer see a more sustained buying from directors, but with a significant insider holding and more recent purchases, Crown Castle insiders are reasonably well aligned, and optimistic for the future. So these insider transactions can help us build a thesis about the stock, but it's also worthwhile knowing the risks facing this company.
