Pose spoilers for season three episode three, 'The Trunk', follow.

Pose's third and final season features the surprise return of Candy Johnson-Ferocity, following her sad death in a motel room in season two.

'The Trunk' takes fans back in time to Elektra Evangelista's (Dominique Jackson) younger years, revealing more details about how the House of Abundance was formed, and as part of this flashback episode, we got an insight into a young Candy.

Star Angelica Ross, who plays Candy, has revealed all about her surprise return to the FX drama, telling Entertainment Weekly that she jumped at the chance to be back on set with the Pose cast and crew, who she describes as being like a family.

"I was not expecting the call, but once I heard that it was going to be the final season, I was like, 'I don't think they're going to let this season go without there being an appearance from Candy'," she said, adding that returning to set was "such a reunion".

"It was such a beautiful space to be in and we recognise that it's unique and that we'll probably never have all of us, at least together, have this family experience on set," she said. "All of those girls are my sisters."

Ross, who will next be seen in the 10th season of American Horror Story, also spoke about how she approached the flashback scenes, saying that the cast was working from experience.

"It's one of those things where when you look at the flashback and you look at Elektra's backstory, or when you look at Blanca's backstory in season 1, or any of the characters where we go into their past, for all of us, it all feels familiar," she explained.

"We either went through something similar like that ourselves, or we have friends [...] who have gone through those things. We know it very intimately. When we do go back, all of us have done our own character work and it all makes sense when it goes back that we each want to help resolve issues that we know that LGBTQ people and LGBTQ families are struggling with still today."

As for how she played the younger version of Candy, Ross revealed that she did her best to sow the seeds for the character that Candy later becomes.

"I just wanted to make sure I created a youthful energy because we were going back in time," she said.

"It's so funny to me because I just turned 40. I just wanted to look inexperienced as far as Candy is concerned, but also I wanted to drop hints, which obviously they did in the script, to Candy's business savvy.

"It was just really making sure that I leaned into those moments that help people see the beginning essence of Candy."

Pose boss Steven Canals recently told Digital Spy that the show's team initially had doubts about Candy's death, revealing that it was "a tough story for us to tell".

Pose season three airs on FX in the US. A UK air date has not yet been confirmed.
