Portugal 2-0 Uruguay LIVE! Fernandes brace - World Cup 2022 result, match stream and latest updates today
Portugal beat Uruguay 2-0 on Monday with two goals from midfielder Bruno Fernandes to become the third team after France and Brazil to qualify for the World Cup knockout stage.
The Europeans had dominated possession before Fernandes’ 54th minute cross floated past Uruguayan goalkeeper Sergio Rochet, who was rooted to the spot as Cristiano Ronaldo rose to head the ball and initially celebrated the goal as his.
Fernandes scored the second in injury time after a penalty was awarded for handball following a video review.
Uruguay, who had knocked Portugal out of the 2018 World Cup, will rue a string of chances on the break: midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur skipped past three players only to see his shot brilliantly saved, Maxi Gomez hit the post and Luis Suarez shot into the side netting.
Portugal’s second win in two games put them top of Group H on six points and heading into the last 16. Uruguay, third on one point, must beat Ghana in their final group game to have a chance of progressing.

Portugal player ratings: Fernandes shines as Ronaldo claims his goal
21:09 , Jonathan Gorrie
Bruno Fernandes may have one or two goals on the night for Portugal - and was unlucky not to grab a third - but was still the star man on the night at Uruguay were beaten at the World Cup.
Cristiano Ronaldo ran off celebrating the opening goal but was not officially awarded it after his header was adjudged to have failed to meet Fernandes’s cross.
Portugal then won a penalty which Fernandes dispatched with Ronaldo off the pitch, settling nerves to seal his nation’s spot in the knockout stage. Uruguay will need to beat Ghana to get through Group H and avoid their first World Cup group stage exit since 2002.
Nizaar Kinsella was at Lusail Stadium following a Ronaldo-led Portugal side.

Bruno Fernandes scored twice as Portugal beat Uruguay to progress into the last World Cup’s last-16.
The opening 45 minutes had perhaps been the most turgid of the tournament so far. A game dominated by seasoned veterans looking for a last dance, the tempo was something approaching that of a waltz, with only Rodrigo Bentancur going close to breaking the deadlock by gliding through the Portuguese defence.
Unlike club level this season, however, the Tottenham midfielder could not finish and struck tamely at Diogo Costa.

Fernandes: Ronaldo situation not ‘uncomfortable’ for Portugal
17:59 , Jonathan Gorrie
Bruno Fernandes has insisted Cristiano Ronaldo’s acrimonious exit from Manchester United has not created an awkward atmosphere in the Portugal camp.
Following his explosive interview ahead of the World Cup, in which Ronaldo accused Erik ten Hag of disrespecting him and hit out at a number of senior figures at the club, it was always likely that the 37-year-old has played his final match for United.
That has proved to be the case, with it announced on Tuesday that Ronaldo had left the club with immediate effect. Both parties described it as a “mutual agreement”.
There were suggestions that Fernandes had given Ronaldo a frosty reception when the pair met having joined up with the national team, though that has since been downplayed. United full-back Diogo Dalot is also in the Portugal squad, with the situation certainly an unwanted one for boss Fernando Santos.
Portugal get their World Cup campaign underway on Thursday when they face Ghana, before fixtures against Uruguay and South Korea, as they look to go all the way in football’s biggest tournament for the first time in their history.
Speaking ahead of his country’s opening Group H match, Fernandes revealed he has not held discussions with Ronaldo over his United departure and insisted the squad were not giving any thought to club matters.
“We haven’t discussed the topic - we are all focused on the national team and the World Cup,” Fernandes said.
“You know how important playing for Portugal is for Cristiano and for all of us. It is the dream of every player. Our focus is 100% on the national team and we are all aware of what we have to do.
“I don’t feel uncomfortable. It was a privilege to play with Cristiano and a dream at the club. Cristiano has always been an inspiration for me, it was a dream to be able to play with him at Man Utd, but we know nothing lasts forever.
“It was good while it lasted but we have to respect his decision, regardless of us agreeing or not. We know it might be difficult to make decisions but these must be for the best of our families.”

Portugal injury news: Unclear how Danilo was injured
17:15 , Jonathan Gorrie
Santos also added the Portugal camp have simply no idea how Danilo broke ribs in training.
“It is a type of injury that no one can explain. We don’t understand how that could have happened,” said Santos.
“It’s normal these injuries happen but we didn’t see how it happened exactly. Initially we did not think it was a very serious one.
“We had a few exams to see if he was breathing properly and apparently that was the case, but afterwards we saw it was more serious. We are following it up.
“I am not a doctor so can’t talk about it in detail but as far as I know he is evolving positively. We are expecting to have him [back] soon but if not we have three other midfielders who can replace him.
“We do not need to have any drama or cry over it. We are very sad for him. We have to think of him as a human being beyond being a player.
Santos wary of Uruguay’s threat
17:06 , Jonathan Gorrie
Portugal coach Fernando Santos, meanwhile, is wary of Uruguay’s threat on the counter. Clearly, he did not watch Luis Suarez against South Korea...
"We will have to be very careful because they can press their opponents really intensely, force them into errors and then hit them hard," Santos said.
Uruguay want 2018 repeat
16:55 , Jonathan Gorrie
After beating the Selecao in the round-of-16 four years ago, Uruguay are looking for a repeat.
Manager Diego Alonso, however, isn’t resting on such laurels.
About what happened four years ago, it’s a different match, we have different players, it will be a completely different match," Alonso said.
"Portugal have a very good squad, they have excellent players, they have a wonderful coach with wide experience.
"That makes them a dangerous team. On the other hand, we also have our own weapons. We will try to win, we will bring our A game."
Harry Maguire taking inspiration from Manchester United team-mate Cristiano Ronaldo amid criticism
16:46 , Jonathan Gorrie
Harry Maguire is inspired by how his former teammate Cristiano Ronaldo handles criticism ahead of his 50th cap for England.
The 29-year-old has been the most debated team selection for Gareth Southgate before the World Cup in Qatar.
However, he justified his selection with a positive display in the 6-2 win over Iran on the opening day and is now in line to face the USA tomorrow at Al Bayt Stadium.
Ahead of the match, Maguire addressed the ongoing criticism he receives from both his own and opposition supporters. “Of course, as a footballer, no one likes being criticised,” Maguire said. “But it is part and parcel of the game. I have played with Cristiano Ronaldo over the last couple of years and he is one of the greatest footballers to kick a football.
Portugal-Uruguay full of nostalgia as old masters of dark arts collide
16:39 , Jonathan Gorrie
In a World Cup of last dances, this has the potential to be the fieriest of tangos.
Qatar 2022 was, long before it began, billed as the final curtain call on the international stage for a host of generation-defining footballers: Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo, Robert Lewandowski, Luka Modric and Gareth Bale, to name but a few.
But when Uruguay meet Portugal in Doha this evening, two of modern football’s great dark artists will take the floor. Luis Suarez, the 21st century’s signature World Cup super-villain, and Pepe, who in deputising for the injured Danilo will become the third-oldest outfield player ever to appear at the tournament, three months short of his 40th birthday. “He is a monster,” Portugal boss Fernando Santos said of Pepe yesterday. “He’s going to play, for sure. He’s always ready.”
