Pork doughnuts, Flamin’ Hot Cheetos corn: What to eat while watching the Charlotte Checkers
It’s hockey season, and the Charlotte Checkers have a new lineup of menu items to keep you munching along at Bojangles’ Coliseum home games this year while they take the ice.
Opening weekend kicks off Friday, Oct. 22, at 7 p.m. against the Hershey Bears, followed by a rematch Saturday, Oct. 23, at 6 p.m. with $5 kids tickets.
Come hungry and willing to try new things. Sure, you can grab a Kayem hot dog topped with chili and shredded cheddar cheese, or a slice of Hungry Howie’s pizza. There’s even a roasted veggie wrap with hummus. But there are creations on the menu for Checkers games that you likely won’t find anywhere else.
Here are our top 5 picks for Charlotte Checkers game food that’s as fun as a goon fight:
Barbecue pulled pork on a glazed doughnut
Sure, you’ve heard of burgers on doughnuts (shout out to the Fat Frannie at Fat Cat Burgers + Bakeshop), but barbecue pork on doughnuts is a new one on us. Try it, if you dare, and don’t wear white. Pictured at top.
Cheese chicken and chili dip
Hockey rinks are chilly by design, so warm up by digging into a cozy bowl of cheesy chicken and chili, served with tri-color tortilla chips. It’s shareable — but you might want to keep it for yourself.
Corn on the cob
Who doesn’t love corn on the cob? But this side dish is elevated with Flamin’ Hot Cheetos — which is on trend and showing up lots of places these days. This version uses mayo to create a Hot Cheetos breading.
Fried pickles
The folks at Bojangles Coliseum have gotten creative here. You can pair your fried dill pickles with a variety of toppings, including Buffalo sauce, Carolina Gold sauce, ranch dressing or bacon. Or you can really go out on a limb and try the fried sweet pickles topped with cinnamon sugar and a side of maple syrup for dipping. Your choice.
Mac and cheese and pulled pork in a waffle cone
If the barbecue doughnut is too much for you to handle, here’s another option: barbecue pulled pork on top of mac and cheese in a waffle cone. It’s warm, it’s perfectly portable game food and it’s a bit of a splurge.
Bonus: There’s dessert
If you’re not already stuffed, you can top off your game night meal with fried Oreos, loaded with powdered sugar and chocolate, caramel and strawberry syrup.
