Poll results: Here’s the high school baseball player of the week in southwest Illinois

JD Kramer of Belleville West High School is the winner of this week’s Belleville News-Democrat Baseball Player of the Week high school poll, as selected by readers of bnd.com.

In recent action, Kramer, a senior pitcher/catcher/first baseman, fired a complete-game 6-hitter in a 3-0 shutout of Alton and also collected 2 hits and 4 RBI against Freeburg. Kramer is batting .348 on the season and 15 RBI, while, on the mound, posting 3 victories and a 3.02 earned run average.

Of note, Kramer has pitched the most complete games of anyone in the Southwestern Conference and also has the best strike to walk ratio in the league and leads his team in hitting.

Kramer tallied 32% of the votes to win a close battle against Sammy Ritter of Belleville East High School (28%) and Ethan Bagwell of Collinsville High School (23%). The voting was so tight that, at one point Thursday night, Kramer and Ritter were in a virtual tie at 28% — with Kramer 4 votes ahead — and Bagwell right behind at 26%.

Other BND nominees this week included Connor Bain of Triad High School, Brendan Brock of Mascoutah High School, Kameron Hanvey of Gibault Catholic High School, Chase Lewis of Breese Central High School and Matt Miscik of Highland High School. The poll ended at 11:59 p.m. Thursday.

To be clear, this poll is not scientific. In fact, we invite you to vote as many times as you want. It’s all for fun, BND readers.

Anyone can nominate a varsity high school softball or baseball player for an upcoming poll by emailing gvartanian@bnd.com. The next poll will appear on the BND’s website — www.bnd.com — at 5 a.m. Tuesday. Next week’s poll will be a vote for the boys prep team of the year.
