Cricket Australia has postponed a three-match men’s Twenty20 international series against Afghanistan scheduled for August due to concerns over deteriorating human rights for women and girls in the Taliban-controlled country. The matches were scheduled to be hosted by Afghanistan but played in the United Arab Emirates. It marks the third time Cricket Australia has declined to play the Afghan team since the Taliban seized control of Afghanistan in September 2021 and placed restrictions on female participation in sport, work, education and travel.

Japanese shares ended higher on Tuesday, while the yen slid to 150 per dollar after the Bank of Japan as widely expected ended eight years of negative interest rates and ushered in the nation's first policy tightening since 2007. In a week filled with central bank meetings across the globe, the BOJ heralded a new era as it shifted away from years of ultra-easy monetary policy. "Likely, the BOJ will find that it is getting 'stuck at zero', being unable to lift short-term interest rates meaningfully further in the coming quarters."
Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan said that Armenia may face a war with Azerbaijan if it does not compromise with Baku on returning some strategic Azerbaijani territories that Armenia has controlled since the early 1990s. Pashinyan was speaking during a Monday meeting with residents of border areas in northern Armenia's Tavush region, close to a string of deserted Azerbaijani villages that Yerevan has controlled since the opening phases of the countries' three decade-long conflict in the early 1990. Pashinyan has repeatedly signalled in recent weeks that he is willing to return the villages to Azerbaijan, which are important for Yerevan, as they control its main road northwards to the border with Georgia.
The killing of a 13-year old boy in northern China last week, for which three boys are in police custody, has triggered a heated discussion in the media on juvenile crime and the plight of children left at home by migrant workers. Police arrested three boys and took them into custody after they allegedly bullied and killed the junior high school student in the small city of Handan on March 10, and then buried him in a shallow pit, state media reported. Local police are investigating the case as a homicide and have set up a team of more than 60 people to probe the case, state media broadcaster CCTV News reported.

The European Central Bank will be in position to discuss an interest rate cut in June, Vice President Luis de Guindos said on Tuesday, joining a long list of policymakers putting the June 6 meeting on the table for a potential start of policy easing. ECB President Christine Lagarde earlier this month said the bank was just beginning to discuss whether to dial back interest rates given a comforting fall in inflation and policymakers on both the hawkish and dovish side of the spectrum have endorsed that timeline. Market investors are somewhat sceptical, however, and a cut is fully priced in only by July as concerns are growing that the U.S. Federal Reserve could delay its initial move and the ECB would be hesitant to move on its own.
