Poland 0-2 Argentina LIVE! World Cup 2022 result, match stream and latest updates today

Poland vs Argentina - LIVE!

Argentina advanced to the knockout stages of the World Cup with a 2-0 victory over Poland in their final Group C match, even though skipper Lionel Messi saw a first half penalty saved at Stadium 974. The victory moved the South American side to the top of the group and they will face Australia in the last-16 while second-placed Poland take on reigning champions France.

Argentina took the lead just one minute into the second half when Alexis Mac Allister got on the end of Nahuel Molina’s cross and, despite making weak contact, he saw his shot creep over the line with Polish keeper Wojciech Szczesny beaten. The goal was just reward for Argentina who had dominated possession while Poland barely managed to get out of their own half.

The second goal was the result of some patient buildup where Argentina knocked the ball around before Enzo Fernandez unlocked the defence with a through-ball for Julian Alvarez, who found space in the box and smashed it into the top corner.

Easily the most one-sided match of the World Cup in the stands also proved to be one of the most one-sided on the pitch.

Argentina clicked into gear to set up a last-16 tie against Australia as Group C winners after a 2-0 victory over Poland, sealed by goals from Alexis Mac Allister and Julian Alvarez, and notable for Lionel Messi‘s first-half penalty miss.

If their defeat by Saudi Arabia was wretched, and the jittery win over Mexico down to a Messi rescue mission, then this was a much more accomplished display, albeit in strange circumstances, which suggests Lionel Scaloni’s side can live up to pre-tournament expectations in the knockouts.

Mac Allister on playing Australia next...

21:40 , Matt Verri

“We think they are a good team. I played against them in the Olympic Games, we lost.

“So we know how difficult they are, of course, not the same team and we are not the same team but they are a very good team and it will be a tough side.”

Player ratings

21:23 , Matt Verri

Lionel Messi 7

Incredibly fortunate to win penalty, then saw it brilliantly saved. Redoubled efforts after miss, though, and carved Poland open on several occasions after half-time.

Julian Alvarez 8

Brought real energy to forward line and saw effort from tight angle saved before break. Took his goal superbly.

Goal that sealed Argentina’s win...

21:10 , Matt Verri

Poland are through!

21:00 , Matt Verri

There’s been late drama in the other match, Saudi Arabia scoring deep into stoppage-time!

Mexico win 2-1 but it’s not enough - they are out.

Argentia top Group C, Mexico through as runners-up and will face France in the last-16.

FT: Poland 0-2 Argentina

Argentina through as group winners!

What happens between Poland and Mexico remains to be seen, a few minutes left in the other match.

Malik Ouzia at Stadium 974

20:54 , Matt Verri

Do you reckon Lionel Messi’s got a few Mexican mates? He’s teasing Poland, almost imploring Lewandowski to boot him up in the air.

20:52 , Matt Verri

90+3 mins: Ball slid through to Tagliafico.. dinked over Szczesny and cleared off the line! Inches away from being knocked out.

Corner Argentina, they’re in no rush to take it. Poland are hanging on for dear life, while doing absolutely nothing.

Malik Ouzia at Stadium 974

20:50 , Matt Verri

Everyone has pretty much stopped watching what’s going on on the pitch because there are a couple of screens dotted around the press box showing the Mexico game.

They’ve just had a goal disallowed for offside, which wasn’t immediately clear without commentary...

20:49 , Matt Verri

90 mins: Six minutes added on.

Poland not getting within 20 yards of the ball.

Malik Ouzia at Stadium 974

20:48 , Matt Verri

Poland really should know this situation well: they were playing against Japan in the final game of the group stage at the last tournament when Japan’s players basically stopped playing to ensure they didn’t commit any fouls and went through on fair play.

20:47 , Matt Verri

88 mins: Poland are barely moving, Argentina happy to just knock the ball around. Not the most thrilling of conclusions.

Poland will be very fortunate to go through, they’ve been so poor tonight.

20:45 , Matt Verri

85 mins: Five minutes to go, and this is madness. Poland relying on not picking up any more yellow cards.

Well they could be out here! Martinez through on goal, drags it badly wide of the far post.

Massive moment, that would have knocked Poland out.

Malik Ouzia at Stadium 974

20:44 , Matt Verri

Piatek just on as a sub has jogged around pretty much the whole Poland team telling them, I presume, not to stick the boot in.

Malik Ouzia at Stadium 974

20:41 , Matt Verri

Poland are playing the riskiest of games here. They’re sitting off, they’re gambling on 2-0, no fouls and Saudi Arabia to hold out.

20:38 , Matt Verri

79 mins: Martinez on to replace Alvarez up front, decent option to have off the bench.

Poland have just picked up a yellow card... it’s now 7-5! Two more of those for Poland and then we can only assume qualifcation comes down to rock, paper, scissors.

Malik Ouzia at Stadium 974

20:37 , Matt Verri

At the risk of sounding like a broken record, how did Lionel Scaloni not have Enzo Fernandez in his starting lineup at the beginning of this tournament?

20:33 , Matt Verri

74 mins: This has been an incredible performance from Messi, apart from that penalty miss.

Sets Alvarez away, he slashes at the shot though as he loses his balance and it’s into the side netting. Should really have scored.

20:30 , Matt Verri

71 mins: How has Messi not scored?!

Cut back perfectly to him in the box, on his left foot... but it’s saved by Szczesny. Straight at the goalkeeper.

Messi could have had six goals tonight.

20:29 , Matt Verri

70 mins: This is going to be a crazy final 20 minutes.

As it stands, Poland are going through on the basis of having fewer yellow cards than Mexico. Yes, you heard.

Avoid the tackles!

GOAL! Poland 0-2 Argentina | Julian Alvarez 67'

20:27 , Matt Verri

THAT SHOULD SEAL IT!

Long spell of possession, eventually it comes to Alvarez and he rifles a strike into the top corner. Superb finish!

Dan Kilpatrick at Stadium 974

20:24 , Matt Verri

There’s still an edge to the atmosphere here but you sense it would turn into a real party if Argentina can get the second goal to make this game secure.

As space opens up, Messi is becoming increasingly dangerous.

20:23 , Matt Verri

64 mins: This goal from Messi is surely inevitable. Again he’s dribbling into the box, onto that left foot and away from the defenders. Fired the effort at goal, blocked behind for a corner.

Short once more, all the way back to the halfway line. Not sure about that...

20:21 , Matt Verri

62 mins: Messi with another glorious pass, might just copy that for later.

Ball comes to Mac Allister in the box, space for the shot but it’s straight at Szczesny. That was a decent chance to get his, and Argentina’s second.

Malik Ouzia at Stadium 974

20:19 , Matt Verri

Not sure whether the word has got on, but Poland have to lift it here. The floodgates could easily open for Mexico in the other game in this group and they’ll be sailing out if they do.

20:18 , Matt Verri

59 mins: Argentina turn to their bench for the first time. Paredes on for Di Marina.

Acuna also coming off, Tagliafico on to replace him at left-back. 30 mins to go in Group C and it’s still all up in the air!

20:15 , Matt Verri

56 mins: Mexico now lead Saudi Arabia 2-0, they’re clawing back that goal difference deficit.

Messi is getting closer and closer to his goal, again into the box but his effort is blocked. Argentina camped in the Poland half now.

20:13 , Matt Verri

53 mins: Such a difference now from Poland, they’re suddenly getting bodies forward and pressing high up the pitch.

At the other end Messi just glides away from the challenges, gets the shot all wrong though as he gets his feet in a bit of a tangle. That would have been a magical goal.

Malik Ouzia at Stadium 974

20:11 , Matt Verri

Parallels with England’s game against Wales last night. A lot of huffing and puffing in the first-half, then an immediate breakthrough at the start of the second. Can Argentina kill the game now?

20:08 , Matt Verri

49 mins: Time for Poland to show some ambition. Acuna into the book for a late challenge, can have no complaints about that.

Great delivery into the box, Glik with a great chance to equalise but the header is just wide!

GOAL! Poland 0-1 Argentina | Alexis Mac Allister 46'

20:06 , Matt Verri

ARGENTINA TAKE THE LEAD!

Less than a minute into the second-half... Poland make a disastrous start to the half.

Comes down the right, low cross into the box and Mac Allister scuffs it into the far corner for his first international goal.

Back underway!

20:04 , Matt Verri

Up and running for what is going to be a huge 45 minutes!

20:01 , Matt Verri

Argentina with 66% possession, 12 shots, seven on target, seven corners... no goals.

Poland have barely left their half, Lewandowski hasn’t had a kick, but they’re doing exactly what they need to for now.

However, both Ecuador and Senegal got themselves into problems sitting back and trying to hold on yesterday - might be a lesson to learn for Poland.

Elsewhere in Group C...

19:55 , Matt Verri

So it’s 0-0 in both matches at half-time.

That means Poland would go through as group winners, if is stays like this. They’d face Australia in the last-16.

Argentina would also go through, though they would be up against France next!

How big could it prove to be...

19:52 , Matt Verri

HT: Poland 0-0 Argentina

19:49 , Matt Verri

And that’s half-time.

Szczesny has kept Poland in it, saving Messi’s penalty after an outrageous decision to give the spot-kick.

Justice served really that it was missed - feels inevitable the way it’s going that Argentina will get their goal though.

19:46 , Matt Verri

45+1 mins: Three minutes added, mere seconds by this tournament’s standards. Does seem to have calmed down a bit in recent days after the hours being added on at the start.

Argentina will be so frustrated to go in with this goalless, but as it stands that would be enough for them to go through.

Malik Ouzia at Stadium 974

19:44 , Matt Verri

I haven’t got the details to hand but have a butcher’s back through Szczesny’s major tournament record and performances and you’ll see he’s tended to have a pretty torrid time of it.

That’s two huge penalty saves he’s produced in the group stage and as things stand he’s kept his side in the World Cup.

19:44 , Matt Verri

44 mins: Szczesny making save after save, the second a relatively comfortable one. Was a decent one to deny De Paul before that.

Poland desperately hanging on for half-time, they can’t get out of their own half.

Dan Kilpatrick at Stadium 974

19:43 , Matt Verri

Judging by social media, the consensus is that justice was done with Szczesny’s terrific penalty save. It was a very soft decision and would have been a harsh way for Poland to fall behind, even if they deserve little from this game on the balance of play so far.

19:41 , Matt Verri

41 mins: Argentina still piling on the pressure, that doesn’t seem to have given Poland much of a lift.

Messi into the box, drifting past the challenges as he tries to make up for the miss. Just crowded out eventually, pretty much the whole Poland team had surrounded him.

IT’S SAVED!

19:39 , Matt Verri

Szczesny has done it again!

He’s made a sensational save to deny Messi, pushing it behind for a corner. Messi does not score for a seventh match in a row... at least not yet.

Huge, huge moment.

PENALTY!

19:37 , Matt Verri

38 mins: Well then... referee is over to look at the monitor! This normally means the decision will be overturned.

There’s not much contact at all, but Szczesny did catch Messi in the face with his glove as he stretched for the ball.

AND IT’S GIVEN! PENALTY ARGENTINA!

19:36 , Matt Verri

36 mins: Big save Szczesny!

The pressure is relentless now, Argentina have to feel the goal is coming.

Ball played through to Alvarez, he’s denied as the goalkeeper flies off his line. Alvarez clips it back into the box, Messi flattened by Szczesny as the former Arsenal man gets nowhere near the cross.

Not particularly convincing, won’t be a penalty though.

19:33 , Matt Verri

33 mins: Di Maria swings a corner in, not far away from flying into the top corner as Szczesny quickly rushes back onto his line. Just about tipped over for another corner.

De Paul will take it on the other side of the pitch. Goes flat to the near post, hacked away.

Malik Ouzia at Stadium 974

19:32 , Matt Verri

Not sure Poland have got their approach quite right here. They only need a point and they look solid but in this tournament, most teams who have sat in have got what’s coming to them eventually.

19:31 , Matt Verri

31 mins: Acuna is getting into such good positions on the left.

Again Messi slides it through to him, low cross is fired across the face of goal but Cash is there to clear. Good positioning.

Lewandowski struggling to get a touch on the halfway line, can’t get anything to stick.

19:28 , Matt Verri

29 mins: Argentina twice go close in a matter of seconds!

First they get it down the right, cut back perfectly into the path of Alvarez and he doesn’t really catch the shot. Still looked to be heading on target, blocked.

Comes to Acuna who absolutely leathers it at goal, flies just wide of the far post.

Dan Kilpatrick at Stadium 974

19:27 , Matt Verri

Argentina are moving the ball around patiently and looking for cracks in a well organised Poland side. None have appeared yet and you are already starting to wonder if it might take a moment of individual inspiration to fashion a breakthrough...

19:27 , Matt Verri

27 mins: Ball lumped up the pitch by Poland, Lewandowski interested as it bounces up and he challenges Romero, but can’t make it stick.

Pressure building as Argentina dominate the ball more and more. De Paul takes a heavy touch though and loses it, kidding no-one as he launches himself to the ground.

19:24 , Matt Verri

24 mins: Argentina corner now, taken short again by Messi.

Out to De Paul who tries to float it back to Messi, cut out though and Poland can clear their lines. Midway through the first-half, Argentina on top but not much in the way of chances to show for it.

19:22 , Matt Verri

22 mins: Corner for Poland, their first of the match. Comes after good work from Cash.

First cross cleared away, back in and Glik goes for a very ambitious flick towards goal. Loops up comfortably for the goalkeeper.

Malik Ouzia at Stadium 974

19:20 , Matt Verri

Rodrigo De Paul looks a lot more comfortable playing in that more advanced role now that Enzo Fernandez is in the side to play deeper.

He was caught out in possession leaving the defence exposed a couple of times in the first game but had a bit more of a buffer now.

19:19 , Matt Verri

19 mins: That’s strike two for Acuna... another one and Messi might start refusing to pass to him.

It’s another wonderful pass out to him inside the box, but he heads it straight at Szczesny and Poland survive the danger.

Cash then charges forward for the first time, shoved over by Acuna who is not thrilled with the decision. Correct one though.

19:17 , Matt Verri

17 mins: Messi curls a lovely pass wide to Acuna, who cuts inside onto his right foot.

Space is there for the shot, but the shot is not the best, to put it mildly. Slices it high and wide over Szczesny’s goal.

19:15 , Matt Verri

15 mins: Argentina not pressing particularly high, or at all really. Poland able to knock it around at the back with no real pressure on them.

Similar story at the other end, Poland content to sit in their shape. Argentina with a chance to break here, Fernandez overhits the pass through to Alvarez though.

19:11 , Matt Verri

11 mins: And now Messi fires an effort at goal from a tight angle, Szczesny turns it behind for a corner.

That comes to nothing, but Poland are struggling to get out now. Di Maria and Messi pretty much getting on the ball at will.

19:10 , Matt Verri

10 mins: Brilliant from Messi, wriggles away from a couple of challenges as it opens up. He finds Di Maria, cuts inside onto his left foot and lets fly.

Smashes... into Messi. Was a lovely move up until that point... the main man can’t help but get involved.

Malik Ouzia at Stadium 974

19:08 , Matt Verri

We’ve got the usual sections of raucous fans behind both goals - it’s just that they’re both supporting the same team.

19:07 , Matt Verri

7 mins: First moment for Messi, losing the ball but then immediately wins it back.

Gets the shot away at goal with his right foot, tame effort and Szczesny has plenty of time to just topple onto that.

19:06 , Matt Verri

6 mins: Poland can break after a loose pass from Di Maria, though they’re not exactly flood forward.

Ball played long towards Lewandowski who is by himself, doesn’t reach him anyway. Argentina dominating possession so far, as expected.

19:04 , Matt Verri

4 mins: Bereszynski needs some treatment after being clattered by Otamendi as the ball is played into the box.

He’s fine to continue. Will assume there was actually something wrong, and he wasn’t time wasting with just the 88 minutes to go.

19:02 , Matt Verri

2 mins: Argentina on top in the opening minutes, Di Maria driving into the box and he earns an early corner for his side. Greeted with a huge roar.

Messi the man to take it, doesn’t beat the first man. He may well be human.

KICK-OFF!

19:00 , Matt Verri

We’re underway - Argentina have to turn up or they’re going home.

18:57 , Matt Verri

Forget this ‘fair play’ madness as a way of deciding groups if everything else is level. Anthems is really how it should be done.

Argentina with maximum points in that respect, helped by the fact the stadium is about 99% on their side.

Here we go!

18:54 , Matt Verri

Teams are out at Stadium 974, Argentina with huge support behind them as ever.

All the cameras on Messi, before the TV shot eventually flicks over to Lewandowski. He’ll very much be planning to take all the headlines tonight.

Time for the anthems.

18:49 , Matt Verri

Warm-ups pretty much done, kick-off coming up very shortly.

Reminder that Argentina can go through with a draw, as long as Mexico and Saudi Arabia also draw, but they’ll be wanting to make it simple and get all three points here to make sure.

Poland only need a point to go through, but sitting back and hanging on for that will make it a very long 90 minutes for themselves.

One man taking most of the attention...

18:44 , Matt Verri

Malik Ouzia at Stadium 974

18:36 , Matt Verri

Still half-an-hour until kick-off but this is shaping up like it could be just about the most one-sided crowd at any game I’ve been to so far.

Argentina are probably the best supported team out here and I don’t think I’d seen a single Poland fan until we got off the Metro outside the group earlier on this evening.

Key duo out to warm-up

Another four changes from Argentina boss Lionel Scaloni, who has reversed his decision to drop Cristian Romero for Lisandro Martinez in the second game. Star striker Lautaro Martinez is also out but we do at least get to see Enzo Fernandez in the starting XI at last.

Canelo apologises to Messi

18:16 , Matt Verri

Canelo Alvarez has now apologised for his previous comments towards Lionel Messi. Yes, you heard.

The Mexican boxer was previously furious after he believed a video showed Messi wiping a Mexican shirt on the floor in the dressing room, but he has now backed down. Think we can officially rule out a fight between the two of them.

“These last few days I got carried away by the passion and love I feel for my country and made comments that were out of place for which I want to apologize to Messi and the people of Argentina,” Canelo tweeted.

“Every day we learn something new and this time it was my turn.

“I wish both teams much success in their matches today and here we will continue supporting Mexico until the end.”

Scaloni: We are on the right path

18:05 , Matt Verri

Argentina boss Lionel Scaloni believes his side are back on track and have rediscovered their identity after that crucial win last time out.

“Obviously after a victory against Mexico, we are feeling better emotionally,” he said. “We are on the right path now.

“Have we recovered our identity after the (Messi) goal? It depends on how you see it, because then we had to defend the result, whatever it took. That’s football. It’s tough.

“We had a couple of chances after the goal to get a bigger result, at the end of the match we managed to do that, and that’s what counts.

“That’s our identity – we fight for every single ball and try to be strong. That’s what we asked our players ahead of the match, and that really reassured us – that’s what we saw on the pitch. Yes, the first half wasn’t great, but we saw our players fighting.”

Molina and Acuna start at full-back for Argentina, as Romero comes back into the side to partner Otamendi.

Big call comes up front as Alvarez gets the nod, meaning Martinez drops out of the side. Mac Allister, Fernandes and De Paul all involved in midfield.

As for Poland, Milik drops out and Swiderski starts for them, he’ll be tasked with linking up with Lewandowski.

Tense affair in store

17:39 , Matt Verri

Easy to think Messi will drag Argentina over the line tonight and they’ll ease into the last-16.

That’s far from inevitable though - Poland are yet to concede in the tournament and Argentina won’t enjoy the low block they’re faced with.

Could well prove to be a very tight, nervy night. In fact it probably will be exactly that!

Messi on Argentina’s false start

17:29 , Matt Verri

Lionel Messi declared Argentina’s World Cup belatedly underway after inspiring Sunday night’s crucial victory over Mexico.

Having been stunned by Saudi Arabia in their opening game earlier in the week, Argentina knew a second successive defeat would have seen them knocked out of the tournament with a game to spare.

However, Messi’s sensational opener on 64 minutes and substitute Enzo Fernandez’s fine curling effort earned a 2-0 win and Lionel Scaloni’s men can get things well and truly back on track tonight.

“Today starts another World Cup for Argentina,” Messi said on Sunday. “I tell people the same thing, that they continue to believe. Today we did what we had to do.

“We had no other choice. We had to win so that we depended only on ourselves.”

What they need...

17:19 , Matt Verri

All four teams can still qualify for the last-16, which complicates the picture slightly. Brace yourselves.

Poland are top of the group as it stands and will go through to face Saudi Arabia next should they beat Argentina tonight.

A draw will also be enough for them to qualify, while they will even go through with a defeat if Saudi Arabia fail to beat Mexico - though that depends on goal difference.

As for Argentina, they need to win to beat sure of reaching the knockout stages and would likely top the group if they do so.

A draw would seem them through too if the other match also finishes level, or if Mexico win but fail to overhaul the goal difference deficit.

Got it? Good.

Messi to face Polish barrage

17:11 , Matt Verri

After being compared to legendary Alpine skier Alberto Tomba, Lionel Messi will attempt to navigate his way around Poles and guide Argentina into the last-16.

Poland head coach Czeslaw Michniewicz says tonight is more than simply a shootout between Messi and Robert Lewandowski, but knows his side will need a big effort to stop the Argentina legend.

“At our team briefing we talked about Alberto Tomba on the slope; he was able to avoid everyone,” said Michniewicz, whose side top Group C, one point ahead of Argentina.

“So I need to put my players in positions to make a difference because, if not, Messi will score easily. You need more than one person to halt him.”

Next up...

17:04 , Matt Verri

Whoever tops Group C will face Australia in the last-16, with France waiting for the runners-up.

First priority for Argentina is just to make the knockout stages, but avoiding France is also pretty high on the ‘to-do list’.

Argentina will have their full focus on winning tonight though, whatever happens after that is for another day.

Evening Standard prediction

16:57 , Matt Verri

This is a really tough one to call, given Argentina’s stuttering start to the tournament, and Poland’s own stodginess before eventually beating Saudi Arabia. A draw would suffice for Lewandowski and company, and they might set themselves up to be difficult to beat.

Breaking down rigid banks of four hasn’t been Argentina’s strength at this tournament and they might struggle to do so at Stadium 974. We’re calling a draw and the knockout stage hopes of a nation to be hanging in the balance.

Standard Sport predicts: 1-1

Argentina team news

16:51 , Matt Verri

Argentina could make changes to their starting line-up as they look to secure qualification to the World Cup knockout stages.

It should be a case of as you were for captain Lionel Messi and fellow forwards Lautaro Martinez and Angel Di Maria, leaving Julian Alvarez and Paulo Dybala again on the bench.

But it’s a different story further back as Leandro Paredes pushes for a recall, after sitting out against Mexico, and Cristian Romero tries to regain his centre-back spot from Lisandro Martinez.

At full-back, Nicolas Tagliafico or Marcos Acuna are vying for the left-back role while Juan Foyth is one of three names hoping to get the nod on the right.

Predicted Argentina XI: E. Martinez; Molina, Otamendi, Li. Martinez, Tagliafico; Fernandez, Paredes, De Paul; Messi, La. Martinez, Di Maria.

Poland team news

16:44 , Matt Verri

For Poland, it’s a relatively straightforward situation for head coach Czeslaw Michniewicz, who has no new injury concerns and is likely to name an unchanged team after a resolute win over Saudi Arabia.

Robert Lewandowski will be looking to add to his tally after finally scoring a first ever World Cup goal last time out.

Predicted Poland XI: Szczesny; Cash, Glik, Kiwior, Bereszynski; Zielinski, Bielik, Krychowiak, Frankowski; Milik, Lewandowski.
