Podcast: Is Miami right to stick with Van Dyke? And can Canes turn this season around?

The Miami Hurricanes are sticking with Tyler Van Dyke.

Whether it’s the right move could determine the course of Mario Cristobal’s first season.

Van Dyke will make his 14th straight start for Miami on Saturday when the Hurricanes host the North Carolina Tar Heels and for the first time he’ll do so with questions circling about whether he’s the right guy for the job.

It’s the only place this episode of the Eye on the U podcast could begin, as David Wilson and Susan Miller Degnan, the Miami Herald’s Hurricanes beat writer, weigh in on Miami’s quarterback controversy on the eve of Atlantic Coast Conference play.

As good as quarterback Jake Garcia has a chance to be, both Wilson and Degnan aren’t giving up on Van Dyke yet, even if the quarterback’s leash needs to be particularly tight.

In the end, Van Dyke’s proven track record is enough for the Hurricanes (2-2) to give him the benefit of the doubt and give him a chance to respond to his underwhelming start to the season.

Garcia, however, looms in the background and it’s not crazy to think he could eventually spark a run like Van Dyke did last year — if Van Dyke can’t regroup on his own.

Miami’s issues, however, run much deeper than just the play of its quarterback. Every year, losses tend to compound in South Florida and these Hurricanes need to prove their stunning loss to the Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders last month won’t derail their season before ACC play even begins. At this point, it’s an issue bridging an entire generation in Miami, and Wilson and Degnan wrap up the episode by offering up some theories as to why, including the ease of transfers in Florida high school football and the constant churn of coaches in Coral Gables for the last 20 years.
