Prince William has send his well wishes to Christian Eriksen after the footballer collapsed on the pitch during Denmark’s Euros clash with Finland on Saturday.

The game in Copenhagen was suspended before half-time after the former Spurs player fell to the ground and was given emergency treatment on the field.

Uefa later confirmed that the 29-year-old Inter Milan player’s condition has “stabilised” and he was awake in hospital.

Last night the Duke of Cambridge was among many well known figures to send messages of support.

He tweeted: “Encouraging news about Christian Eriksen, we are all thinking about him and his family.

“Well done to the medical team and Anthony Taylor for their calm and swift action. W.”

Fabrice Muamba, the former Bolton midfielder who collapsed after suffering a cardiac arrest during a televised FA Cup game in 2012, simply tweeted “Please God”.

Former England striker Gary Lineker apologised after the shocking images of Eriksen’s face and distraught wife watching on helplessly from the sidelines were zoomed in on by host cameramen.

He tweeted: “I understand some of you would have been upset with some of the images shown (we were too).

“Obviously these were the host pictures and out of our control. They should have stayed on a wide of the stadium. Apologies.”

Viewers were quick to praise referee Anthony Taylor for stopping the game so quickly and the Danish players for shielding Eriksen from cameras as he received CPR.

Kasper Schmeichel was hailed for consoling Eriksen’s wife and assisting medical staff with the player lying behind the screens.

England manager Gareth Southgate issued a statement through the FA: “On behalf of The @FA, our players and staff, we send our very best wishes to Christian and those close to him.

“We pay tribute to those who went to his aid with such care to give the support he received. Our thoughts remain with Christian and his family tonight.”

Lukaku celebrated his goal for Belgium against Russia by sprinting to a camera to deliver a simple message to his stricken Inter Milan teammate: “Chris, Chris I love you”.

UK Culture Secretary Oliver Dowden was among those who posted online about the “awful scenes” witnessed at the match in Copenhagen, as Eriksen’s teammates surrounded him to protect his privacy.

The midfielder dropped to the ground at the Parken Stadium shortly before half-time, leaving players from both teams in clear distress.

It said the match would be restarted on Saturday evening “following the request made by players of both teams”.

Denmark tweeted an update which read: “Christian Eriksen is awake and is (set) for further examinations at Rigshospitalet (hospital).”

Other players posting similar tweets for the Denmark midfielder included former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher and Manchester United’s former right-back Gary Neville as well as current England and Aston Villa forward Jack Grealish.

David Lammy, the Labour MP for Tottenham and shadow justice secretary, tweeted: “Prayers and thoughts for Danish and Spurs Legend Christian Eriksen.

“We are all rooting for you brother.”

London Mayor Sadiq Khan tweeted: “Deeply upsetting scenes in Copenhagen.

“My thoughts right now are with Christian Eriksen, his family, and everyone in Denmark and around the world praying for his recovery.”
