A Pennsylvania state senator abruptly left a West Wing meeting with President Donald Trump after being informed he had tested positive for the coronavirus, a person with direct knowledge of the meeting told The Associated Press on Sunday. Republican state Sen. Doug Mastriano had gone to the White House last Wednesday with like-minded Republican state lawmakers shortly after a four-hour-plus public meeting that Mastriano helped host in Gettysburg — maskless — to discuss efforts to overturn president-elect Joe Biden’s victory in the state. Trump told Mastriano that White House medical personnel would take care of him, his son and his son’s friend, who were also there for the Oval Office meeting and tested positive.

PARIS — Lille missed the chance to move level on points with French league leader Paris Saint-Germain when it drew 1-1 at Saint-Etienne on Sunday.Saint-Etienne avoided an eighth straight league defeat, taking the lead through forward Wahbi Khazri's 32nd-minute penalty.Lille pressured strongly after the break and forward Jonathan Ikone equalized in the 64th, but then veteran Turkey striker Burak Yilmaz scooped a shot over for Lille when ideally placed with 15 minutes left.Lille is two points behind defending champion PSG and leads Lyon, Monaco and fifth-place Montpellier on goal difference.Earlier, Lyon made it nine games unbeaten when it beat Reims 3-0 at home.Forward Karl Toko Ekambi put the home side ahead in the 21st minute when he volleyed in Memphis Depay's brilliant cross from the left. Reims midfielder Moreto Cassama was sent off 10 minutes later for fouling Depay as he was running through on goal.Lyon had a second goal ruled out shortly after when striker Tino Kadewere was given offside.Kadewere and Toko Ekambi also hit the post in a one-sided first half, and the second goal came soon after the break when Toko Ekambi set up midfielder Bruno Guimaraes. The day got even better for Lyon when Moussa Dembélé netted his first of the season, latching onto Toko Ekambi's pass and expertly dinking the ball over the goalkeeper in the 81st.Monaco also won 3-0, beating Nimes with goals from Sofiane Diop, Gelson Martins and Kevin Volland. In Sunday's other matches, it was: Metz 0, Brest 2; Lens 1, Angers 3; Lorient 0, Montpellier 1, and Nice 1, Dijon 3.PSG’s 2-2 draw at home to Bordeaux on Saturday opened the door for Lille, and made it five goals conceded in two games for the defending champion's shaky defence.___More AP soccer: https://apnews.com/Soccer and https://twitter.com/AP_SportsJerome Pugmire, The Associated Press

Joe Biden has hired an all-female communications team for his administration, including naming veteran Democratic spokeswoman Jen Psaki as his White House press secretary. Ms Psaki will be one of seven women to fill the upper ranks of Mr Biden’s communications team, making it the first of its kind where all top aides tasked with speaking for a presidential administration will be female. “Honored to work again for @JoeBiden, a man I worked on behalf of during the Obama-Biden Admin as he helped lead economic recovery, rebuilt our relationships with partners (turns out good practice) and injected empathy and humanity into nearly every meeting I sat in,” Ms Psaki tweeted on Sunday following the announcement.
The federal government says it's extending a slew of travel restrictions and rules meant to curb the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic into the new year as case counts continue their steady rise across the country. Public Safety Minister Bill Blair and Health Minister Patty Hajdu say the rules, first imposed near the beginning of the global outbreak, will now be in effect until Jan. 21, 2021 for travellers entering Canada from a country other than the United States. The ministers say restrictions for visitors crossing the border from the U.S. are currently in place until Dec. 21, but may be extended. Among the rules is a requirement for anyone entering the country to self-isolate for 14 days upon entry into Canada. But the ministers also say they're looking to make it possible for "high-performance, amateur sporting organizations" to hold major international events on Canadian soil. They say the successful applicants would need to present a public health plan as well as show they've secured the support of provincial and territorial governments and health authorities. The announcement comes as COVID-19 case counts continued to mount, though at levels slightly below the record-setting daily tallies seen in several regions in recent weeks. Public health officials in Quebec are reporting 1,395 new cases in the past 24 hours, while Ontario is reporting 1,708 new infections. The provincial totals since the pandemic began now stand at 141,038 and 114,746, respectively.Cases are also rising steadily in Atlantic Canada, with New Brunswick reporting 14 new diagnoses on Sunday and Newfoundland and Labrador recording four additional infections.Public health officials in Nova Scotia logged 10 new cases, all in the province's central zone, which includes Halifax.Authorities in Manitoba reported 365 new COVID-19 cases on Sunday and 11 new deaths -- almost all of which were linked to outbreaks in care homes. The case count in Nunavut also rose by 13.Canada's top public health officer, Dr. Theresa Tam, said the highest rate of infection is among people aged 80 and over, while more outbreaks are happening in long-term care homes. Both Quebec and Manitoba are reporting new, significant outbreaks at such facilities. This report by The Canadian Press was first published Nov. 29, 2020.The Canadian Press

Romain Grosjean credited the halo protection bar with saving his life in a fiery crash that ripped his car in two on the opening lap of the Bahrain Formula One Grand Prix on Sunday. Grosjean, who clambered out and limped away from the crash, miraculously escaped with only burns to his hands and was being treated overnight at a nearby hospital. "I wasn’t for the halo some years ago but I think it’s the greatest thing that we brought to Formula One and without it I wouldn’t be able to speak to you today."
