Picking a fight with KC? White House says Eagles will be the next Super Bowl champion

White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre on Friday may have picked a fight with Kansas City when she told reporters that the Eagles are on the road to victory on Super Bowl Sunday.

“As you know, we are en route to the home of the future Super Bowl champion, Philadelphia Eagles,” Jean-Pierre told reporters on Air Force One as they flew to the City of Brotherly Love to give a speech at a water treatment plant and at the Democratic National Committee’s Winter Meeting. “As the First Lady would say, ‘Go Birds.’”

Rep. Sharice Davids, a Democrat who represents the Kansas side of the metro, defended the Chiefs against the braggadocio from the White House.

“Well, I’ve always said I’ll stand up to the president when he’s wrong, and this is definitely one of those times,” Davids said. “But I’ll let Kansas City do the real talking next Sunday.”

Rep. Emanuel Cleaver, a Democrat who represents Kansas City, said while he appreciated the Biden administration, he wouldn’t stand for them “talking smack about our Kansas City Chiefs.” He and Davids offered to make a friendly bet over the game.

“If the Press Secretary is so confident in her Philadelphia Eagles, then I hope she’s willing to put some skin in the game, because I’m willing to put some world-famous Kansas City BBQ on the line,” Cleaver said. “But WHEN the Kansas City Chiefs bring the Lombardi Trophy back to Chiefs Kingdom, I look forward to seeing a more humble Press Secretary at the White House podium in a beautiful Chiefs jersey that Rep. Davids and I would be happy to provide.”

It’s no surprise that those in the White House are pulling for the the Eagles ahead of their showdown with the Chiefs next Sunday in Super Bowl LVII.

Biden grew up in Scranton, Pennsylvania and represented Delaware in the U.S. Senate. His presidential campaign headquarters in 2020 was based in Philadelphia.

But the bigger fan of the two is first lady Jill Biden. She grew up in the suburbs of Philadelphia and is a die-hard Eagles fan (like most people from Philly). She attended the NFC Championship game last week, where her beloved Eagles stomped the San Francisco 49ers.

While the Chiefs and Eagles have never faced off in the Super Bowl before, both teams have brought home the trophy recently. The Chiefs beat the 49ers in 2020 to win their first Super Bowl in 50 years.

The Eagles won their first Super Bowl 2018, when back-up quarterback and University of Arizona alumnus Nick Foles led the team on an underdog playoff run that culminated in a victory over the New England Patriots. Both Bidens attended the game.

The Chiefs have already proven that they’re willing to use words from politicians as motivation. Last week, Cincinnati Mayor Aftab Pureval called Arrowhead Stadium “Burrowhead.” After the Chiefs won, Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce called the mayor a “jabroni.”

In the meantime, Kansas City fans can hope Jean-Pierre’s prediction was a jinx.
