Spreads on U.S. high yield bonds, or the premium companies pay over U.S. Treasuries, remain tight despite a pick-up in distress within the asset class, as investors see the majority of issuers weathering higher-for-longer interest rates. Elevated rates and persistent inflation have eaten into the bottom lines of many U.S. corporate borrowers, particularly those with high leverage and lower credit ratings. The dollar volume of defaulted debt rose to over $33 billion in the first quarter from roughly $19 billion in the fourth quarter of 2023, according to a Monday report by Moody's Ratings.

A criminal investigator for the state of Iowa suggested to colleagues last year that busting college athletes for online sports betting would impress the public and “the powers that be” and perhaps nudge lawmakers toward updating gambling laws. “If they get suspended or get a scholarship taken away, so be it,” Division of Criminal Investigation special agent Christopher Adkins wrote in his February 2023 email. Attorneys for more than two dozen Iowa and Iowa State athletes caught in a 2023 gambling sting obtained Adkins' email and 32 others from the Department of Public Safety through an open records request and released them to The Associated Press on Thursday.
U.S. agriculture companies have been brisk importers of Russian fertilizer since the 2022 Ukraine invasion, a practice that is unwittingly helping fund Russia's war against Ukraine, U.S. producer CF Industries said on Thursday. The U.S. does not impose sanctions directly on Russian fertilizer, which is important to global food supplies and prices. On Wednesday, the U.S. Treasury Department issued hundreds of fresh sanctions on other Russian targets over the war.
A gauge of global stocks climbed on Thursday after the Federal Reserve indicated it was keeping a dovish tilt, while the yen retreated after another suspected round of intervention by the Bank of Japan. On Wall Street, U.S. stocks gained slightly in early trading, after Fed Chair Jerome Powell said that while recent inflation readings mean it will likely take longer than expected for central bank officials to become comfortable that inflation will resume its decline, interest rate increases also remained unlikely. Students at the University of North Carolina’s Chapel Hill campus raised an American flag after it was taken down by protesters demonstrating for Palestine.Video filmed by Guillermo Estrada shows the flag being raised on a pole located on the Polk Place quadrangle as people gathered and sang the national anthem. Two people were seen holding up an Israeli flag.“When I walked to class, I saw the Palestinian flag raised on our quad flagpole, and was immediately upset at the act that these ‘protesters’ had made. I cannot say I am fully educated on the Israel/Palestine conflict, but it upset me that my country’s flag was disrespected in order to advocate for another,” Estrada wrote in a thread on X.Estrada said shortly after the flag was raised protesters attempted to take it down again, at which point he and several of his fraternity brothers from the Chapel Hill Pi Kappa Phi chapter held the flag up to stop it from touching the ground.“People began throwing water bottles at us, rocks, sticks, calling us profane names. We stood for an hour defending the flag so many fight to protect,” Estrada said.A GoFundMe asking for money for a party to reward the brothers of Pi Kappa Phi for holding up the flag raised over $439,000. This included a $10,000 donation from billionaire Bill Ackman, according to reports.“Commie losers across the country have invaded college campuses to make dumb demands of weak University Administrators,” the GoFundMe said. “But amidst the chaos, the screaming, the anti-semitism, the hatred of faith and flag, stood a platoon of American heroes. Armored in Vineyard Vines and Patagonia, fueled by Zyn and White Claws, these triumphant Brohemians protected Old Glory from the unwashed Marxist horde — laughing at their shrieks and wails and shielding the Stars & Stripes from Soviet missiles. These boys… no, men, of the UNC Chapel Hill Pi Kappa Phi, gave the best to America and now they deserve the best. Help us raise funds to throw this frat the party they deserve, a party worthy of the boat-shoed Broleteriat who did their country proud.” Credit: Guillermo Estrada via Storyful
