Wall Street followed global shares higher on Friday after news that U.S. nonfarm payrolls grew less than expected last month, easing investor anxiety that tight labor markets and stubborn inflation would not let the Federal Reserve cut rates soon. Treasury yields fell, as did the dollar, after the Labor Department said nonfarm payrolls increased by 175,000 jobs in April, healthy but short of expectations for an increase of 243,000, according to economists polled by Reuters. The unemployment rate stood at 3.9% compared with expectations that it would remain steady at 3.8%.

Federal Reserve officials, buffeted in recent months by concerns the economy might again overheat, got relief on Friday when jobs data for April showed a marked cooling in wage growth and a pace of hiring in line with levels seen before the COVID-19 pandemic. The gain of 175,000 payroll jobs last month was the lowest in more than a year, while the 3.9% annual change in average hourly earnings was the smallest since May of 2021 and continued what has been a steady decline towards the mid-3% range that policymakers feel is consistent with their 2% inflation target. Fed Governor Michelle Bowman, who has been among the more ardent voices on the steps needed to control inflation, said after the release of the data that her outlook remained "that inflation will decline further with the policy rate held steady."

The outlook for soy production in one of Brazil's biggest farm states is deteriorating quickly after heavy rains disrupted harvesting with about a quarter of fields left to reap from in Rio Grande do Sul. The situation has dampened farmer sentiment in Brazil's southernmost state, where soy production was at one point in the 2023/24 season expected to be a record after at least two years of drought slashed output in the region. Leandro da Silva, who manages a grains unit at farm cooperative Cotrisal in the town of Sarandi, said on Friday the impact of the downpours, which left entire cities under water and flooded grain fields in lower areas, could slash production in Rio Grande do Sul to between 19 million metric tons and 20 million metric tons.
