3D Re-Releases
‘Beauty and the Beast 3-D’ – January 13 – Following the huge success of “The Lion King 3-D” last year, Disney made the decision to give a number of their classic animated films the 3D conversion treatment. For many, “Beauty and the Beast” represents the height of Disney’s hand-animated tradition -- although the film did contain some computer-aided animation, subsequent Disney films have gotten rid of hand-animation completely. Thanks to a loving restoration and measured 3D tweaking, Disney’s take on the French fairy tale remains as fresh as it did nearly 20 years ago. A 3D re-release of another quintessential Disney film, “The Little Mermaid,” is due out in 2013.
For years people have complained that Hollywood is creatively bankrupt. Between the endless sequels, constant remakes, and clockwork franchise reboots, audiences have good reason to expect unoriginality from Tinsel Town. Thankfully the major studios may have found a solution that should satisfy both filmgoers and their wallets: 3D re-releases! Movie lovers get to see classic films on the big screen again and the studios get to charge them inflated 3D admission prices. Win-win… right? -- by Will Perkins
