In photos: Iconic tourist hot spots in Italy like you've never seen them — deserted because of COVID-19

Italy was officially put on lockdown by its government as the country reported the most COVID-19 cases in the world outside of China.

Citizens are encouraged to stay in their homes and large public events are currently banned as the number of coronavirus cases continues to skyrocket. As of March 10, Italy has over 10,000 cases and 600 deaths.

The outbreak has prompted other countries to either ban or warn against travel to Italy.

Canada has issued its second highest level of a travel advisory for Italy, advising its citizens to “avoid non-essential travel.” Air Canada has also suspended all its flights to Italy starting March 11.

Cities usually filled with tourists and locals are deserted as the country tries to contain the spread of the novel coronavirus.

Here’s a look at some of those tourist hot spots like you’ve never seen them before.
