‘This is a photo of my great grandmother (1960)’ meme explained
A hilarious meme has taken over Twitter. It’s part homage to one’s family tree and part homage to controversial celebs.
The joke follows a simple format: Someone claims they’re about to reveal a photo of their “great-grandmother,” a “human rights activist.” But instead, they just upload a picture of a celebrity during one of their most scandalous moments.
This is a photo of my great grandmother (1960), she was a passionate womens rights activist. She never stopped fighting for change, she refused to be silenced, and she inspires me every day ❤️ I love you grandma pic.twitter.com/z2WJmLHOLA

The user @taylorwhateverr chose a photo of Nicole Richie getting handcuffed and arrested.
Each meme uses the exact same caption:
“This is a photo of my great grandmother (1960), she was a passionate womens rights activist. She never stopped fighting for change, she refused to be silenced, and she inspires me every day <3 I love you grandma.”
But each features an image of a woman celebrity, typically engaged in a major pop culture moment. The photos are usually grayed out or made to look intentionally grainy or blurry for a retro effect.

In @grey_jarvis’ version, he put a vintage filter over a scene of Blake Lively (as Serena Van der Woodsen on Gossip Girl) getting arrested.

Singer Björk’s smirk just before slapping a photographer outside a Thailand airport in 1996 was the subject of @mountbellyache‘s meme.

Snooki getting arrested on the Jersey Shore in 2010 was apparently also @siighchedelic‘s family history. Snooki even came across the meme and responded to it.
