Philadelphia Phillies first baseman Rhys Hoskins suffers torn ACL in spring training game

The injury bug continues for the Philadelphia Phillies.

The team announced Thursday that first baseman Rhys Hoskins suffered an ACL tear in his left knee just seven days before the start of the 2023 season after he was carted off the field during a spring training game against the Detroit Tigers earlier in the day. He will undergo ACL reconstruction surgery, the Phillies added.

"We love you, Rhys," the team tweeted following the announcement.

With the Phillies up 1-0 over the Tigers in the second inning, Hoskins back-pedaled to field a ground ball from Austin Meadows and abruptly went down holding his left knee. His teammates huddled around him before a cart was brought on the field.

Hoskins had 145 hits, 30 home run and 79 RBIs last season for the Phillies, the defending National League champions. He had a minimally invasive surgical procedure to repair the meniscus in his right knee in December, manager Rob Thomson revealed in February.

PHILLIES: Team won’t put Bryce Harper on 60-day injured list at start of season

It's the latest blow for the Phillies. Slugger Bryce Harper will miss a portion of the season after undergoing reconstructive right elbow surgery in November. Pitching prospect Andrew Painter also sprained a ligament in his right elbow during his spring training debut earlier this month.
