Mito Pereira will take a three-shot lead into the final day of the PGA Championship at Southern Hills after overcoming a shaky turn to surge out in front. Pereira birdied the last to card a 69 and remain ahead of overnight leader Will Zalatoris and Matthew Fitzpatrick, who put himself into contention after shooting an excellent 67.

Rory McIlroy’s bid to end his major drought suffered a significant early blow, however. After a run of five straight pars McIlroy pulled his tee shot to the par-three sixth into the water and ran up a double-bogey five to drop back to two under par. It would be followed by a triple-bogey six and although a run of birdies helped, McIlroy then dropped a further shot at the 18th to finish the day at level par overall.

Earlier in the day, Tiger Woods recorded his worst ever score in the PGA Championship as a successful battle to make the cut took a heavy toll at Southern Hills. Woods shot 79, his previous worst score in the US PGA being a 77 in the first round in 2011. “I just didn’t play well,” Woods said. “I didn’t hit the ball very well and got off to not the start I needed to get off to. I thought I hit a good tee shot down two and ended up in the water, and just never really got any kind of momentum on my side.”

It was confirmed after the conclusion of the third day that Woods had withdrawn from the tournament and the 46-year-old will not play in the fourth round.

PGA Championship leaderboard

Breaking: Tiger Woods has withdrawn from the PGA Championship

00:39 , Jamie Braidwood

Tiger Woods has withdrawn from the PGA Championship following today’s round.

PGA Championship

00:32 , Jamie Braidwood

Pereira speaking to Sky Sports: “I was playing so good on the first seven holes. But then I missed a putt at seven. Sometimes you close your eyes, open them and suddenly you’ve made four bogeys in five holes. I guess it’s a major. On 13 I got a birdie and that gave me a boost, some momentum to get going again. It gave me confidence to forget the bogies.

“I will try to keep my head in the moment. Enjoy it too, it’s the final round of the major. Two, three years ago I would not have believed it. I will try to do my best.”

PGA Championship - Closing birdie for Pereira!

00:21 , Jamie Braidwood

Would you believe it! What a way to finish for Pereira, who sinks a birdie putt from 12 feet on the 18th green to stretch his lead over Zalatoris, who could only make par! Pereira will take a three-shot lead into the final day after overcoming a shaky middle part of his round to card a 69.

PGA Championship

00:15 , Jamie Braidwood

Well, this was not what Bubba Watson and Justin Thomas needed. Both players walk away from the 18th with a bogey, to drop a further shot away from contention. It sums up Watson’s game over the back nine. He’s had four bogeys with a few missed putts from that distance. Thomas got himself back into it with that birdie at 17 but it means little now.

PGA Championship

00:12 , Jamie Braidwood

Matthew Fitzpatrick, speaking to Sky Sports: “Today I’m really proud of myself. I’ve had the experience of having the lead before in Europe, but this is a major and it’s completely different. This is the first time I’ve been in contention in a major and I’m looking forward to it. I just need to try and stay as level as possible.”

Back in it! Zalatoris responds by making that dropped shot back up again at the 17th. His pitch onto the green left him 11 feet and he rolls it in to move two behind Pereira, who was short of the green and is happy to move on with par.

Just the two groups left out there - Watson and Thomas are walking up the 18th now.

PGA Championship

00:05 , Jamie Braidwood

McIlroy walks away as grips the end of his putter in frustration as he signs off his round with a bogey at the last. It sums up his day, really, as he drops to level par overall.

PGA Championship

23:59 , Jamie Braidwood

That par save at the 16th looks all the more impressive now, as Thomas does indeed birdie the 17th to get back to -3. His playing partner Watson moves in other direction though, and they are level again after the former Masters champion makes two bogeys in a row.

PGA Championship

23:54 , Jamie Braidwood

Matthew Fitzpatrick! What a round, what a back nine! He moves to second overall with a birdie at the last, rolled in from the fringe of the green. Just solid play, but brilliant too.

After opening with two bogeys, Fitzpatrick did not drop a futher shot and his three birdies on the back nine sealed a lovely 67. He’s gone 69, 68 and 67 over his first three days. He could be in the final group tomorrow.

PGA Championship

23:52 , Jamie Braidwood

Another twist. Zalatoris found himself in the trees, then the rough, but somehow onto the green in three at the 16th. He looked to have saved par, too, but it just faded away from the hole. Pereira was left with six feet or so for a four as well but makes it, and the lead becomes three once again.

PGA Championship

23:44 , Jamie Braidwood

A gutsy putt from Justin Thomas to save par from 10 feet on the 16th. The American had fallen away slightly with bogeys at 13 and 15, but he’s stopped the slide and will now look to attack the 17th.

PGA Championship

23:39 , Jamie Braidwood

Birdie for Fitzpatrick! He’s been threatening this all day, and the Englishman is into the top three after making an excellent putt from 10 feet on the 17th that came after a good bunker shot.

He’s had so many good putts today that haven’t quite dropped, but that went straight in. After a tough start, it’s been such a clean round from him.

PGA Championship

23:31 , Jamie Braidwood

Cameron Smith is in the clubhouse lead at -5 thanks to an excellent round of 67 in tough conditions.

It was helped by that brilliant eagle at the 17th and he tells Sky Sports: “That was a big one. I was upset after the 16th and making bogey. For the putt to go in was a huge bonus. With the wind going everywhere, it’s tough to judge distance.”

PGA Championship

23:27 , Jamie Braidwood

It’s too little, too late, surely, but Rory McIlroy has his third birdie in four holes and is about to walk down the drivable par-4...

PGA Championship

23:20 , Jamie Braidwood

And there’s the birdie for Pereira! He’s steadied now with a second consecutive birdie - and it was all down to the tee shot. Zalatoris, who was just a fraction off, scrambles up and down from the bunker for a solid par.

PGA Championship

23:14 , Jamie Braidwood

Watson and Thomas are gritting their teeth and digging in, as they both scramble to make their pars at the par-3 14th. Thomas had to putt downhill from 40 feet or so, while Watson got himself up and down from the bunker.

Zalatoris and Pereira are on the tee box: Zalatoris finds himself in the same bunker after catching the front lip of the green. Pereira’s shot carried just half a foot further, and it lands onto the green and rolls to six feet of the hole.

Such small margins.

PGA Championship

23:08 , Jamie Braidwood

Look who’s back! Zalatoris rejoins the lead with a birdie at the par-5 13th! He sinks the putt from a long way out, maybe 35 feet or so.

But what a response from Pereira! He immediately hits back to get a birdie of his own at the same green, rolling it in from 15 feet to edge back ahead.

This is more like it.

PGA Championship

23:05 , Jamie Braidwood

McIlroy is still managing to hit unbelievable shots - which only adds to the frustration, surely, as it shows what is possible.

At 14 he knocks his approach to within inches for a tap-in birdie, his second in a row after gaining a shot at the par-5.

It moves him back to even par overall.

PGA Championship - Eagle for Young!

23:03 , Jamie Braidwood

All of a sudden Cameron Young is in a tie for second after making an eagle at the par-4 16th! The American hit a stunning drive to reach the par 4 in one, and then nailed the putt to move to -5 in a flash.

Further back, Justin Thomas has dropped back after making a bogey at the par-5. The TV directors have not showed how he ended up in the green-side bunker in five, but I can only assume he ended up in the water trying to reach the green in two.

PGA Championship

22:56 , Jamie Braidwood

Pereira’s bogey means there are now eight players within three shots of the lead, with Ireland’s Seamus Power, Mexico’s Abraham Ancer and the American Cameron Young themselves getting a shot closer.

Power is in the clubhouse lead after shooting a 67 today to get down to -3. He told Sky a few moments ago that conditions today were the easiest they have been all week! I’m sure plenty out there will disagree.

PGA Championship

22:53 , Jamie Braidwood

Another one bites the dust for Pereira, this time at the 12th as his par putt slides past. These really are anxious times and the leader has now dropped shots at four of the last five holes. It was another three-putt for him. They just aren’t dropping.

PGA Championship

22:42 , Jamie Braidwood

Bubba Watson hangs in there for a share of second place after making two important par saves on 11 and 12.

Oh hello! Fitzpatrick breaks into the top five with a birdie at the par-5 14th!

PGA Championship

22:40 , Jamie Braidwood

It’s so utterly confusing to see this version of McIlroy after the form he took into the tournament and what was saw during his opening round.

A lovely approach into the 12th should have been followed by birdie but he can’t make it from five feet.

PGA Championship

22:26 , Jamie Braidwood

And the drama continues! Pereira and Zalatoris find themselves side by side in the green-side bunker at the 10th, but the results from there are quite distinct. Pereira’s rolls 12 feet past while Zalatoris tucks his in behind the hole and within five feet. Pereira’s putt misses - his third hole in a row with a dropped shot - but Zalatoris strikes back to save his par! That’s more like the putting we saw yesterday. Another big swing.

PGA Championship

22:22 , Jamie Braidwood

Somehow, it just goes from bad to worse for Rory McIlroy. He avoided the triple bogey earlier as he made a five at the par-3 sixth. But he’s got one now at the par-3 11th.

Just an awful turn for McIlroy and after this latest three-putt, he drops all the way down to +2 overall.

PGA Championship: Drama at the turn!

22:13 , Jamie Braidwood

Pereira asked and received a drop following his drive at the ninth and somewhat fortuitously ended up with his ball on the fairway. His approach was a waste, landing himself beneath a green-side bunker and from there he failed to make it up and down in two.

It’s a consecutive dropped shot for the leader, while Zalatoris found himself in birdie position with a lovely chip into the green. This would cut the lead to two, but no! He turns in disbelief!

PGA Championship

22:00 , Jamie Braidwood

Fitzpatrick is hanging in there, just. He remains on the tails of the top five but shakes his head after seeing a birdie putt at the 10th fade away on the low side.

PGA Championship

21:59 , Jamie Braidwood

Pereira blinks. The PGA Championship leader three-putts from across the green on the par-3 eighth, as Zalatoris’ confidence will be boosted after he saves his par to stay in touch from five feet. Both players look to be in a spot of bother following their drives at the ninth.

PGA Championship

21:46 , Jamie Braidwood

A birdie for Bubba Watson! His three at the par-4 seventh moves him into second place, before he saves par nicely at the par-3 eighth.

Zalatoris drops another on the greens with another nervy putt, while Pereira is holding his nerve as he stays on -10 from seven or eight feet.

At least McIlroy gets a shot back to end his bogey run to close his front nine on 38. That was thanks to a lovely pitch into the green at the ninth.

PGA Championship

21:41 , Jamie Braidwood

Two successive holes with a dropped shot becomes three as McIlroy three-putts at the par-3 eighth. Tough - and he’s back down to even par overall.

To give an indication of how hard the course is playing in this wind, already today we’ve had players like Jon Rahm shoot a 76. Robert McIntyre has just carded an 80.

PGA Championship

21:28 , Jamie Braidwood

McIlroy found himself in a similar position to Zalatoris up ahead at the seventh. He missed the green to the right, with his ball landing down the bank and next to a drain. His chip across the green landed short and left him seven or eight feet for par. It doesn’t drop. McIlroy now at -1.

PGA Championship - Third bogey for Zalatoris

21:25 , Jamie Braidwood

The overnight leader’s struggles continue. After leaving himself with work to do with a chip across the green that stopped short, Zalatoris misses another to drop to -7. Very uncharacteristic from him, but it shows the pressure. Pereira, meanwhile, responds as he holes a par putt from six feet. He is now, suddenly, four shots clear.

PGA Championship

21:16 , Jamie Braidwood

Tiger Woods recorded his worst ever score in the US PGA Championship as a successful battle to make the cut took a heavy toll at Southern Hills.

“I just didn’t play well,” Woods said. “I didn’t hit the ball very well and got off to not the start I needed to get off to. I thought I hit a good tee shot down two and ended up in the water, and just never really got any kind of momentum on my side.”

Asked if he would play Sunday’s final round, Woods added: “Well, I’m sore. I know that is for a fact. We’ll do some work and see how it goes.”

PGA Championship - Double bogey for McIlroy

21:10 , Jamie Braidwood

A disaster for McIlroy at the par-three sixth, after finding the creek with his tee shot. He’s able to scramble up and down for a five but that’s a knife in the heart to his hopes of challenging at the top of the leaderboard. It leaves him eight shots back. That hole was where Woods’ struggles began with a triple bogey earlier.

PGA Championship - Another birdie for Pereira

21:07 , Jamie Braidwood

Pereira extends his lead with a cool birdie putt from eight feet at the fifth! Zalatoris stays where he is after seeing a long one downhill stay high.

PGA Championship

20:57 , Jamie Braidwood

Zalatoris drops another after a three-put at the par-5 fourth, meaning that Pereira finds himself with a two-shot lead early in the round.

Fitzpatrick grabs a second consecutive birdie at the par-3 sixth to get him back to where he started after his opening two bogeys.

PGA Championship

20:41 , Jamie Braidwood

It’s certainly a tough day for scoring out there. Justin Thomas and Bubba Watson both dropped an early shot, before making birdies to get back to where they started.

Matthew Fitzpatrick started his round with consecutive bogeys but has just responded by holing out for birdie from the bunker at the fourth.

PGA Championship - Birdie for Pereira

20:19 , Jamie Braidwood

And Pereira swaps places with his playing partner! He drains a long way on the second to move to -9.

It puts the pressure on Zalatoris, but he makes his par from 12 feet. Still, it’s two-shot swing in the opening two holes.

PGA Championship - Bogey for Zalatoris

20:18 , Jamie Braidwood

Despite looking relaxed, Will Zalatoris has dropped a shot on the opening hole and is now level with Pereira on -8.

He left himself with a lengthy one and will have another at the second after his drive went wayward.

PGA Championship

19:44 , Jamie Braidwood

McIlroy finds himself in the back green-side bunker at the first but plays a lovely shot to get out of trouble and rolls it to within three feet. He gave that a chance, but moves on with par.

Justin Thomas and Bubba Watson are now underway in the group behind.

Will Zalatoris, now on the tee, looks relaxed as he shares a joke with Mito Pereira.

PGA Championship

19:27 , Jamie Braidwood

Fitzpatrick is now underway at -3, but Hatton is set to drop back to where he started after finding the creek at the second.

McIlroy is up on the tee alongside playing partner Abraham Ancer. He has a great opportunity here to bounce back from yesterday’s disappointment.

PGA Championship

19:15 , Jamie Braidwood

There we go. An opening birdie for Tyrell Hatton gets the Englishman to -3. Both Hatton and Fitzpartick, who tees off next, are well placed to make a charge today.

Both players, however, have been very critical of the greens at Southern Hills so far this week.

PGA Championship

19:09 , Jamie Braidwood

It’s been a tough day for Tiger Woods but he is still applauded onto the 18th green as if he was leading the PGA Championship.

Instead, at +12, is at the bottom of the leaderboard out of those players who have made the weekend.

Woods is left with five feet to avoid hitting 80 - and he manages it - but after hitting 69 to make the cut yesterday today’s 79 is a sobering score.

PGA Championship

18:54 , Jamie Braidwood

Webb Simpson has carded a lovely round of 65 to get himself back into the red after starting the day at +4. The American hit five birdies and made an eagle with a chip-in at the par-5 13th.

PGA Championship

18:52 , Jamie Braidwood

Extraordinary! Kramer Hickok has just holed out from the bunker. The only problem, though, was that it was with his third attempt to get out. After his first two attempts hit the bank - and then deflected back to strike him - he lifts it out and it rols into the hole!

PGA Championship

18:34 , Jamie Braidwood

In testing conditions at Southern Hills, there are low scores to be had. That’s according to Webb Simpson, at least, who at -4 has by far set the lowest score of the day so far.

He still has a couple of holes to go, but is on the brink of the top 20 after clawing himself back to even par so far.

Rory McIlroy has arrived at Southern Hills ahead of his tee-off time at 7:30pm. There are about 10 groups still to go out but no one so far has been able to make a big move.

Woods, though, drops down to +13 with his fifth bogey in a row.

PGA Championship

17:43 , Jamie Braidwood

Make that +12 for Woods, as the bogey streak extends to four holes. The damage there came in finding the green-side bunker at the par-4 12th.

PGA Championship

17:38 , Jamie Braidwood

This is unfortunately turning into a horrid afternoon for Tiger Woods.

Three consecutive bogeys over the turn has dropped him down to +11, eight over for his round so far.

Rahm has also now dropped two shots after making bogey at the seventh, but there’s better news for Webb Simpson, who holes out for an eagle at the par-5 to get to -3 for the day.

PGA Championship

17:22 , Jamie Braidwood

Bogeys, bogeys, bogeys.

Spieth starts his round with an opening double bogey, and up ahead Koepka and Rahm have also droped shots to drop further back.

PGA Championship

17:12 , Jamie Braidwood

Tiger Woods’ unlikely bid to play his way into contention for a fifth US PGA Championship came to a watery end in the third round at Southern Hills.

Woods only made the halfway cut with a shot to spare courtesy of playing the final seven holes of his second round in two under, a 69 leaving the 15-time major winner 12 shots off the lead held by Will Zalatoris.

The 46-year-old had nevertheless talked up his chances of making a surge through the field, citing the 63 shot by Bubba Watson on Friday as the kind of score which was possible.

However, after holing from 13 feet to save par on the first, Woods drove into the creek which bisects the second hole and made a bogey five following a penalty drop, before finding more water on the par-three sixth.

Woods then missed the green with his third shot from the drop zone on his way to a triple-bogey six and dropped another shot on the next to slide further down the leaderboard.

Englishman Laurie Canter has made a brilliant start to his round, cracking into the top 20 with three birdies from his opening five holes.

PGA Championship: TRIPLE bogey for Woods

16:31 , Jamie Braidwood

Disaster for Woods - as he tumbles down the leaderboard with a triple-bogey six at the par-3 sixth. His tee shot was well short of the green and found the water, and it got harder from there, as from the drop zone his ball failed to grab onto the green.

Woods sits at +7, four over for his round.

A scrambling, up-and-down par for Woods at the par-5 fifth. His drive found himself among the fans on the left of the fairway and forced him to pitch back out. From the fairway, his approach drifted left and short. But a well controlled putt across the green set up his par.

Further behind, Webb Simpson has made a fast start with birdies at the third and fourth.

PGA Championship

15:52 , Jamie Braidwood

Woods to within five feet at the fourth! Beautiful approach, right into the centre of the green.

Oh no... but the putt lips out around the back. The birdie looked inevitable, but he remains at +1 for the day.

Ironically, his playing partner Shaun Norris was the one to make birdie - despite scrambling from the bank of the creek to the back of the green.

He made the birdie from 40 feet - what a three!

PGA Championship

15:48 , Jamie Braidwood

Morikawa lands a lovely approach into the fifth to within 10 feet, as he looks to get back to even par for his round. Woods made it to the front fringe of the par-three third in two shots but left his birdie putt high. He’s moved onto the fourth and has found the fairway.

PGA Championship

Seven major championships have been held at Southern Hills, the last of which was the 2007 PGA Championship won by Tiger Woods.

On all seven occasions, the winner either led or co-led at the halfway stage, so Will Zalatoris will have history on his side when he tees off as the halfway leader later tonight.

PGA Championship

Woods gives himself a fighting chance at saving par with a beautiful fade around the tree on the left of the fairway to roll it into the green - but the par putt stops a foot short, so he if left to tap in for bogey-five.

There were some notable names who have not made the weekend, though, including world No 1 Scottie Scheffler. The Masters champion had come into the week as a slight favourite but often cut a frustrated figure as he failed to live up to his own expectations.

“I had some good shots I had some bad ones, and I was punished pretty severely for the bad ones,” Scheffler said. “Today, I hit a lot of good shots it just got a few weird gusts and couldn’t make any putts.”

“Definitely frustrating. I’m disappointed too. It’s never fun missing a cut. I want to be able to play the weekend and try to grind it out as hard as I could. I just didn’t have it this week.”

Welcome to The Independent’s live coverage of the third day of the PGA Championship.

Will Zalatoris takes a one-shot lead over Mito Pereira into the weekend as the American bids to win his first major. Justin Thomas and Rory McIlroy remain in contention, despite the latter’s disappointing round yesterday, while Bubba Watson burst into the fold with a brilliant round of 63. There is English hope too with Matt Fitzpatrick six shots back as he attempts to land his first win on US soil.
