Pete Alonso’s second home run thwarts Miami Marlins’ rally in loss to New York Mets

A pair of home runs helped the Miami Marlins erase an early deficit against the New York Mets on Saturday.

But it was the Mets’ second home run of the game that proved to be the game-winner.

Pete Alonso hit a go-ahead home run in the eighth inning off Jimmy Yacabonis as the Marlins fell to the Mets 5-3. The Marlins fall to 32-38, including 1-5 against the Mets. The Mets improve to 47-26.

It was Alonso’s second home run of the game and his 22nd of the season, which leads the National League and is tied with the Astros’ Yordan Alvarez and the Angels’ Mike Trout for the second-most in MLB. Alonso now has 19 career home runs against the Marlins, tied with the Nationals for the most home runs he has against any team.

“He’s dangerous,” Marlins manager Don Mattingly said. “I mean, that’s why they’re where they’re at right now. ... Really their big boys have hurt us these first few games. [Francisco] Lindor had a big game [Friday]. Pete has a big game today. He’s dangerous and we’re not the only team he’s driving in runs against. He’s hurting a lot of people.”

The Mets added an insurance run in the ninth on a Brandon Nimmo RBI double against Richard Bleier that scored James McCann, who singled.

Alonso’s second home run thwarted a Marlins’ rally attempt after falling behind 3-0 early. Outfielder Jesus Sanchez hit a two-run home run in the fourth inning — his 10th of the season — to cut Miami’s deficit to one run. An inning later, Bryan De La Cruz hit his fourth home run of the season, a game-tying solo shot that bounced off the foul pole in left field.

The home runs momentarily negated what the Mets did early against Trevor Rogers. New York opened scoring when Alonso hit a solo home run in the second and added two more runs in the fourth on three hits, a walk and an RBI groundout.

Rogers was pulled with the bases loaded and one out in the fifth. Zach Pop stranded all three runners when he got Alonso to hit an infield fly to Garrett Cooper at first base and struck out Mark Canha with a 98.4 mph sinker.

Dylan Floro and Anthony Bass followed with scoreless sixth and seventh innings, respectively, before Alonso hit his go-ahead home run in the eighth against Yacabonis, who had given up just one run in his first four relief appearances with the Marlins while striking out nine of the 17 batters he faced in that span.

The Marlins’ series finale with the Mets will air exclusively on the Peacock App with first pitch scheduled for 12:05 p.m. It will not be televised locally by Bally Sports Florida.
