Yahoo Movies People are just discovering this connection between Queen Elizabeth II and Marilyn Monroe
Whether you're a Royal Family fan, are one of the millions who've recently streamed Ana de Armas in Netflix's Blonde or neither of the above, you'll definitely still be familiar with two of the most iconic women in pop culture: Queen Elizabeth II and Hollywood star, Marilyn Monroe. The former recently passed away at the age of 96, after 70 years on the throne, whereas sadly Marilyn died of an overdose at the age of 36, back in 1962.
However, people are only just discovering that the two very different (but both highly influential) women share a special link: they were both born in the same year - 1926.
Queen Elizabeth II came along first, making her entrance into the world on 21 April 1926, whereas Marilyn Monroe's birthday was a few months later on 1 June 1926. It's something that although true, feels a little funny to get your head around, given that sadly there are no images of Marilyn in later life as she passed away prematurely.
As for whether or not the two women ever crossed paths with one another, it appears that they did, on 29 October 1956, when both Her Majesty and Marilyn attended the Royal Command Film Performance at Leicester Square in London. As pictured above, the pair can clearly be seen shaking hands and greeting one another, alongside actor Victor Mature, prior to a screening of The Battle of the River Plate.
It sounds as though the meeting was an especially big deal to Marilyn, as according to a report from Town and Country, who write that the actor didn't appear on set that day (at the time she was shooting The Sleeping Prince), and instead spent hours getting her hair tended to and prepping for that evening's interaction.
Rumour has it that the dress code for the Royal Command Film Performance was 'conservative' but that Marilyn, with her own unique flair, instead opted for a low-cut striking gold lamé number.
On the same night, Marilyn also met the Queen's younger sister, Princess Margaret:
It's said that during their brief conversation, Marilyn and the Queen discussed how she was finding her four-month-long stay in Surrey, England, with Marilyn replying, "We [Arthur Miller and I] love it, as we have a permit my husband and I go for bicycle rides in the Great Park."
So there you have it: two great icons, born in the same year, who share a passion for bike rides.
