Penelope Cruz has made a stunning transformation for her latest role, playing a woman diagnosed with breast cancer in the movie ‘Ma Ma’.

Shaven-headed, she stars alongside Alex Brendemuhl and Luis Tosar playing Magda, a teacher from Madrid who battles the disease alongside dealing with a straying husband and looking after her son Dani.

Of the project, which she also helped produce and was directed by ‘Sex & Lucia’ helmsman julio Medem, she said: “I fell in love with the story of this woman, who is like a goddess, a sage.

“It was very important to me to take risks and at no time did I worry if I looked beautiful, was ugly or very ugly.

“It is a tribute to all women who face this disease.”

The movie has done the rounds at several of the key film festivals, and was released in Spain last year, but will get a worldwide release later this year.

She added to Variety: “It’s the first time I portray a character who’s not a woman and lover but a mother.

“It’s one of the most complex, beautiful characters I’ve ever been offered, the most difficult.”

It was recently announced that Cruz is set to star opposite her husband Javier Bardem in ‘Escobar’, playing the Colombian journalist Virginia Vallejo, who had a relationship with drug cartel boss Pablo Escobar (played by Bardem).

She’s also appearing opposite Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson in ‘Zoolander 2′.
