Pembroke Pines Charter girls’ soccer on a roll. Plus Columbus basketball and more soccer

The Pembroke Pines Charter girls’ soccer team, under the direction of Coach Lyndon Lemmers, is having a good season at 10-0-4.

The Class 5A Jaguars have defeated Coral Glades, Flanagan, Fort Lauderdale, Deerfield Beach, Cooper City, Cypress Bay, West Broward, Hallandale, Western and Everglades. They tied North Broward Prep, Stoneman Douglas, Pompano Beach and Cardinal Gibbons.

Cardinal Gibbons won state last season, and Pompano Beach is 15-1-1 this season.

Leading Pembroke Pines Charter is 2021 Miami Herald All Broward first team midfielder Sabrina Arujo. The senior signed with NCAA Division I Northwestern University in Boston.

Another team leader, Eliana Salama, also a Miami Herald All Broward first teamer, signed with SMU and recently left the team because of early enrollment.

Pines Charter features three seniors this season with many underclassmen. Leyla Molina is the other senior. A forward, she signed with Alabama A&M.

Juniors and three-year starters Carina Pau and Natali Brito anchor a very strong defense, which has recorded 13 shutouts.

Goalkeeper Madison Cassanova, an eighth grader, has totaled 11 shutouts, and Gianna Burbrdige, a freshman, is second on the team in goals scored.

Pines Charter reached the region semifinals last season, where it lost to state qualifier Archbishop McCarthy in overtime.

This season Pines Charter is in the same district with that solid Archbishop McCarthy program, coached by Mike Sica. On the region loop, most likely, is another consistently formidable foe, Plantation-American Heritage with Coach Cindy Marcial.

On Tuesday, Jan. 18, Pembroke Pines Charter hosts the always strong St. Thomas Aquinas under the guidance of Carlos Giron at 5 p.m.

Speaking of St. Thomas Aquinas, the Raiders recently edged Archbishop McCarthy 2-1. Player of the Game Gabrielle Stewart and Genesis Hernandez scored for St. Thomas Aquinas (14-1-1).
