Pedestrian killed in south Sacramento roadway identified; driver won’t be cited in crash

A 57-year-old man was struck and killed along a busy corridor in south Sacramento on Wednesday.

California Highway Patrol responded to a pedestrian struck on Florin Road, east of East Southgate Drive, at 8:23 a.m., according to the CHP’s incident report. According to officers, the pedestrian was walking south through the uncontrolled intersection when he was struck by a 2016 Dodge Challenger traveling eastbound at 40 mph.

According to witnesses, the driver of the Challenger saw the man and swerved to avoid him. The pedestrian “at the same time ... must have observed the Dodge” and had moved from the middle lane to the left lane. Despite their actions, the right-front fender of the coupe struck the man, killing him.

The intersection in front of the Krispy Kreme had no pedestrian crossing or roadway markings, the CHP said.

Paramedics were first to arrive at the incident and declared the man dead. The Coroner’s Office identified the man as Stacey Lloyd Cloud; the CHP said he was a resident of Sacramento.

The driver, who was a 23-year-old man from Oakley, was not injured and remained on the scene as officers investigated the crash. The CHP said the driver was not cited, and that alcohol and drugs were not a factor in the collision.
