Peaky Blinders star Cillian Murphy is set for a big few years after adding another exciting movie role to his slate.

The actor, who will also headline Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer this summer, has just joined the feature film adaptation of Claire Keegan's novel Small Things Like These.

The project has been greenlit by Ben Affleck and Matt Damon's Artists Equity and will also star Ciarán Hinds and Emily Watson. The story is set over Christmas in 1985 and follows Bill Furlong (Murphy), who discovers secrets being kept by the convent in his town.

Tim Mielants, who worked with Murphy on Peaky Blinders, is directing while Enda Walsh has written the screenplay. Principal photography is already underway in Ireland.

Murphy spoke highly of the source material and the movie, saying he is "honoured" to join the project.

"I’m honoured and thrilled to have the opportunity to bring Claire Keegan’s magnificent novel to the screen," Murphy said.

"We have gathered together a phenomenal team of creatives to make this film, and found exceptional partners in AE, a studio led by Matt Damon and Ben Affleck — actors and filmmakers I have admired for many years."

Murphy is best known for his role as Tommy Shelby in Peaky Blinders, which ended in last year after six series, although a planned movie adaptation is still in the works. However, fellow Peaky Blinders actor Daryl McCormack said he hasn't heard much about the project.

"It's something I haven't actually heard about. I've been asked multiple times but I've yet to hear any news with regards to that," McCormack said.

Peaky Blinders is available to stream on BBC iPlayer and Netflix.
