Patrick Mahomes can set two NFL playoff records Sunday in Chiefs’ game against Bills

Simply by taking the field in Sunday’s AFC Divisional playoff game, the Chiefs’ Patrick Mahomes and Bills’ Josh Allen will be part of history.

According to the NFL, they will be just the fourth pair of starting quarterbacks to have multiple playoff meetings in their first five seasons in the league.

The others: Miami’s Dan Marino and Seattle’s Dave Krieg in 1983 and 1984 AFC Divisional playoff games; Denver’s John Elway and Cleveland’s Bernie Kosar in the 1986 and 1987 AFC championship games; and Carolina’s Cam Newton and Seattle’s Russell Wilson in NFC Divisional playoff games in 2014 and 2015.

Mahomes can set an individual record Sunday against the Bills in what will be his 10th career playoff start, the most in Chiefs history.

Mahomes has 2,728 career playoff passing yards with 22 touchdown passes and a 105.1 rating. With a pair of touchdown throws against the Bills, Mahomes will surpass Drew Brees and Kurt Warner (23 career TD passes each) for the most by a quarterback in his first 10 postseason start, the NFL said.

With 50 passing yards Sunday, Mahomes will supplant Wilson (2,777 yards) for the most in a quarterback’s first five seasons in postseason history, the Chiefs said.

Other historical notes

Tight end Travis Kelce has four consecutive playoff games with 100 or more receiving yards. If Kelce has 100 receiving yards against Buffalo, he’ll be the first player in NFL history to reach that total in five straight games.

A 100-yard receiving game would be the eighth of Kelce’s career, which would tie Hall of Famer Jerry Rice for the most in NFL playoff history.

The Chiefs are looking to extend a franchise record by winning a sixth-straight postseason home game. That would tie for the 10th-longest streak in NFL history, the Chiefs said.

A Chiefs victory would give coach Andy Reid his 19th career playoff win, which would tie Don Shula for the third-most in NFL history. Tom Landry (20) and Bill Belichick (31) are the all-time leaders.
