Passenger uses zip ties on woman accused of punching flight attendant, TN officials say

A passenger used zip ties to restrain a woman accused of punching a flight attendant, Tennessee officials said.

Around 7 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 27, an officer was called about a “disruptive passenger” on a Spirit Airlines flight at a gate at the Nashville International Airport, according to an affidavit. The flight crew told the officer that the woman had punched one flight attendant and pulled another flight attendant’s hair.

The officer arrived to find that another passenger had put “plastic flex cuffs” around her feet, the affidavit said.

The officer could also “smell the strong odor of an alcoholic beverage” coming from the woman and noticed her eyes were bloodshot and her speech was slurred, according to the affidavit.

“The flex cuffs were removed from (her) feet, and she was asked to walk off of the aircraft,” the affidavit said. “While walking (she) could not stand on her own two feet without assistance from officers on scene.”

When asked how much she had to drink, the 42-year-old woman replied, “a lot,” according to the affidavit. But she later reportedly said “what the f--- did I do wrong? I’m not drunk.” Officers told her she was under arrest for public intoxication, the affidavit said.

“While in handcuffs (she) would continue to yell ‘f--- you I didn’t do anything wrong’ and attempted to pull away several times while trying to get her into the vehicle,” the affidavit said.

As she was put into a patrol car, the affidavit said she “began stiffening her legs against the door” to prevent the officer from closing it and yelled “shoot me motherf-----.” She was then taken to Metro Booking.

The flight crew did not press simple assault charges, according to the affidavit.

Spirit Airlines said in a statement to WKRN that it does “not tolerate aggressive behavior of any kind” and that the “passenger is no longer welcome on any of our flights.” The flight departed from Fort Lauderdale, the news outlet reported.

“Thank you to our guests who assisted our crew and local law enforcement for their assistance,” the airline said, according to WKRN. “We will work with the relevant authorities to ensure this individual is prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.”

Spirit Airlines has not responded to a request for comment from McClatchy News.
