Palm Springs Film Festival Sets In-Person Dates For 2022

The Palm Springs Film Festival is set to return as an in-person gathering in 2022.

The festival’s annual Film Awards Gala will take place on on Thursday, January 6, at the Palm Springs Convention Center, with film screenings (including the opening-night presentation) beginning that Friday. The festival will wrap January 17 with Best of Fest.

The announcement regarding the 33rd edition was made Thursday by The Palm Springs International Film Festival Society.

While Palm Springs ShortFest is still scheduled for June 22-28, 2021, with more details to be shared later in the month, the 2021 festival and gala did not take place as an in-person event. Film Award honoree selections were still annoucned in recognition of the best in cinema over the past year, with Entertainment Tonight airing a tribute.

This year’s honorees included Sound of Metal‘s Riz Ahmed (Desert Palm Achievement Award, Actor), Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom star Viola Davis (Desert Palm Achievement Award, Actress), The United States vs. Billie Holiday Oscar nom Andra Day (Breakthrough Performance Award), The Father‘s Anthony Hopkins (Career Achievement Award), Judas and the Black Messiah‘s Daniel Kaluuya (International Star Award, Actor), Promising Young Woman‘s Carey Mulligan (International Star Award, Actress), One Night in Miami actor and songwriter Leslie Odom, Jr. (Spotlight Award, Actor), Mank‘s Gary Oldman (Chairman’s Award), Nomadland helmer Chloé Zhao (Director of the Year Award) and writer/director Aaron Sorkin’s The Trial of the Chicago 7 (Vanguard Award).

This year, The Palm Springs International Film Festival Society also shared the best in film through virtual member and community programs.

The last in-person edition of the Palm Springs Film Festival took place in 2020, running January 2-13. One of the largest film festivals in North America, it last year welcomed 136,000 attendees.

"I've been keeping up and waiting for the chance for my age group and I didn't think it was going to happen this soon but since it is, I'm definitely going to jump on that chance," said 42-year-old Russell. He doesn't have an appointment just yet, but is planning to book one. In Windsor-Essex, pharmacies have started offering the AstraZeneca-Oxford vaccine to the expanded age group and say appointments are going fast. The province lowered the age group eligible to get the AstraZeneca vaccine on Sunday evening. "It's been a very exciting morning. The number of phone calls has been very, very large," said pharmacist Gary Willard, who works at Ziter's pharmacy in Windsor. "We're just happy to give out the vaccine to another crowd that's eligible to receive it." With the target age expanding, Willard said they expect to be out of their vaccine supply relatively "quickly." At this time, he said they have enough vaccine to last about eight days. Pharmacies are booking people aged 40 and older to receive a COVID-19 vaccine.(Jacob Barker/CBC) Before Ontario's announcement, the vaccine was only available to people aged 55 and older in Ontario in line with recommendations from the National Advisory Council on Immunization (NACI) earlier this spring. The vaccine has raised concerns after a small number of younger people in Europe developed a serious blood-clotting condition. In the last week, Canada has also reported two cases of clotting linked to the vaccine. On Sunday, however, the federal government said the provinces and territories were free to expand eligibility for the AstraZeneca-Oxford vaccine to any adult over the age of 18 as some pharmacists warned they had doses sitting idle because of the age restrictions. 'Have patience' Pharmacist and vice chair of Ontario Pharmacists' Association Tim Brady says he's also seeing an increased demand. As of Sunday night, Brady says his pharmacies had 180 appointments available and by 11 a.m. Monday, "they were all gone." "The good news is people want shots, which is what we want to hear," said Brady, who owns Brady's Drug Store in Belle River, Essex and Tilbury. "We want to get shots in arms, with all the issues of the variants coming out." As for the hesitancy around the AstraZeneca vaccine, Brady said he makes sure people getting the shot are informed. The odds of getting a blood clot are estimated to be between one in 100,000 and one in 250,000. At this time, Brady said he has supply though it is flying off the shelves, with someone coming in roughly every 10 minutes to get a shot. "I try to tell everybody have patience ... it's a fluid thing and we're trying to get them out as quick as we get them in," he said. As for Russell, he says he's not worried about the risk for clotting and just wants to get the shot. And for others his age, Russell says, "get it done, get it as early as you can and the faster more of us get vaccinated the quicker we can get back to a normal life." And while his normal looks like a game in Detroit, a vaccination isn't the only thing standing in his way, as the Canada-U.S. border is still closed to non-essential travellers.

A massive wireless outage that has left customers of Rogers Communications Inc. without phone or texting services since early Monday has broad economic ramifications across Canada, experts said.   • Mass fossil site may prove tyrannosaurs lived in packs

    SALT LAKE CITY — Ferocious tyrannosaur dinosaurs may not have been solitary predators as long envisioned, but more like social carnivores such as wolves, new research unveiled Monday found. Paleontologists developed the theory while studying a mass tyrannosaur death site found seven years ago in the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument in southern Utah, one of two monuments that the Biden administration is considering restoring to their full size after former President Donald Trump shrunk them. Using geochemical analysis of the bones and rock, a team of researchers with the University of Arkansas determined that the dinosaurs died and were buried in the same place and were not the result of fossils washing in from multiple areas. The new Utah site is the third mass tyrannosaur grave site that’s been discovered in North America — bolstering a theory first developed 20 years ago that they lived in packs. However, more research needs to be done to make that argument, said Kristi Curry Rogers, a biology professor at Macalester College who wasn’t involved in the research but reviewed the finding Monday. “It is a little tougher to be so sure that these data mean that these tyrannosaurs lived together in the good times,” Rogers said. “It’s possible that these animals may have lived in the same vicinity as one another without travelling together in a social group, and just came together around dwindling resources as times got tougher.” In 2014, Bureau of Land Management paleontologist Alan Titus discovered the site, which was later named the Rainbows and Unicorns quarry because of the vast array of fossils contained inside. Excavation has been ongoing since the site's discovery because of the size of the area and volume of bones. “I consider this a once-in-a-lifetime discovery for myself,” Titus told reporters during a virtual news conference. “I probably won’t find another site this exciting and scientifically significant during my career.” The social tyrannosaurs theory began over 20 years ago when more than a dozen tyrannosaurs were found at a site in Alberta, Canada. Another mass death site in Montana again raised the possibility of social tyrannosaurs. Many scientists questioned the theory, arguing that the dinosaurs didn't have the brainpower to engage in sophisticated social interaction, Titus said. “Going that next step to understand behaviour and how animals behave requires really amazing evidence,” Joseph Sertich, curator of dinosaurs at the Denver Museum of Nature & Science, said at the news conference. “I think that this site, the spectacular collection of tyrannosaurs but also the other assembled pieces of evidence ... pushes us to the point where we can show some evidence for behaviour.” In addition to the tyrannosaurs, researchers have also found seven species of turtles, multiple fish and ray species, two other kinds of dinosaurs and a nearly complete skeleton of a juvenile Deinosuchus alligator. These other animals do not appear to have all died together. Paleontology groups have been among those pushing the federal government to restore the Bears Ears National Monument and Grand Staircase-Escalante to their original sizes to protect the region’s rich paleontological and archaeological record. Interior Secretary Deb Haaland visited southern Utah earlier this month as she prepared to submit recommendations on whether to reverse Trump’s decision to downsize the monuments.     NEW YORK — The two-game suspension of Cincinnati Reds outfielder Nick Castellanos for his role in an on-field brawl during the season’s opening weekend was upheld Monday by Major League Baseball special assistant John McHale Jr. Castellanos will serve the penalty during the first two games of a three-game series against Arizona that starts Tuesday. Michael Hill, MLB's new senior vice-president for on-field operations, issued the suspension April 5 and cited Castellanos for “his aggressive actions and for instigating a benches-clearing incident” during a game against St. Louis on April 3.   • US under Biden will no longer call migrants 'illegal aliens'

    WASHINGTON — Employees of the two main U.S. immigration enforcement agencies were directed Monday to stop referring to migrants as “aliens,” a dated term that many people consider offensive. Memos issued by Customs and Border Protection, as well as Immigration and Customs Enforcement, tells employees to use the words “non-citizen” or “migrant." The change reflects guidelines set by the Biden administration, which is reversing many of the anti-immigrant policies of former President Donald Trump. Instead of “illegal aliens,” which was still being used by some government officials in press releases and elsewhere, the employees of CBP and ICE should instead use “undocumented noncitizen” or “undocumented individual,” according to the memos. Acting CBP Commissioner Troy Miller said the directives were necessary to “set a tone and example” at an agency that includes the Border Patrol. “We enforce our nation’s laws while also maintaining the dignity of every individual with whom we interact,” Miller said. “The words we use matter and will serve to further confer that dignity to those in our custody.” Administration critics dismissed the new language guidelines. “We use the term ‘illegal alien’ because they’re here illegally,” said Sen. Tom Cotton, a Republican from Arkansas. “This kind of weakness and obsession with political correctness is why we’re having a crisis on the border in the first place.” As recently as last Thursday, CBP issued a press release out of Texas that described a Border Patrol operation in the Rio Grande Valley "resulting in the apprehension of ten illegal aliens.” But a release Monday seemed to comply with the memo, describing the rescue of a “lost undocumented noncitizen” near Ocotillo, California. The change in language comes as the Biden administration deals with a record number of children and teens, mostly from Central America, seeking to enter the U.S. at the southwest border. Under the new guidelines, “unaccompanied alien children” would be referred to as “unaccompanied noncitizen children,” according to the memos. Employees are also directed to describe the “assimilation” of refugees and immigrants as “civic integration.” CBP is turning away most adult migrants attempting to enter the U.S. under a public health order issued at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. But the Biden administration is allowing unaccompanied minors and some families to remain, at least temporarily, while authorities determine whether they can stay through the asylum process or under some other legal category. Biden administration officials blame the rising number of migrants at the southwest border on a number of factors, including two recent hurricanes that struck Central America and the economic ravages of COVID-19 in the region. Critics blame the administration's moves to reverse some of the hundreds of measures taken under President Donald Trump to curb both legal and illegal immigration and support for legislation that would enable some already in the country to remain.   • Huawei CFO's team asks judge for adjournment in final extradition hearings

    VANCOUVER — Lawyers for Meng Wanzhou asked a B.C. Supreme Court judge Monday to delay the final leg of hearings in the Huawei executive's extradition case one week before it is set to begin. Richard Peck said the legal team needs time to review new evidence obtained through a court order in Hong Kong that could support its argument that the United States misled Canadian officials in describing the allegations against Meng. "What we request is a reasonable time in which to assess the documents and determine their likely admissibility," he said. In response, a lawyer for Canada's attorney general argued there's no basis to believe the documents will be relevant and accused Meng's team of trying to turn the extradition hearing into a trial. After 2 1/2 years of legal proceedings, "and mere days from reaching the finish line, the applicant asks this court to take a several month pause. Her request should be denied," the Crown said in a written response. Meng was arrested at Vancouver's airport in 2018 at the request of the U.S. to face fraud charges that both she and Huawei deny. She is accused of lying to HSBC about Huawei's control of subsidiary Skycom during a presentation in 2013, putting the bank at risk of violating U.S. sanctions against Iran. The court has heard that Huawei sold Skycom to Canicula Holdings, another company that Huawei controlled financially, in 2007. While Meng's Canadian lawyers have not yet seen most of the documents from HSBC and their contents are unclear, Peck said it's believed they will shed light on what the bank knew about the relationship between the companies and how much it relied on Meng's 2013 presentation. "We say these materials are relevant because they are referenced from the very bank at the very time including the very parties involved in this matter," Peck said. Meng's team also said in court documents that Canada's attorney general should launch an investigation into whether Meng was arrested based on inaccurate information. Peck proposed that the final three weeks of the hearing, set to begin April 26, be adjourned until Aug. 3 to allow time for such a probe, as well as for COVID-19 cases to subside. But Robert Frater, a lawyer for Canada's attorney general, said there's no evidence to believe the new documents are relevant to the extradition case. Meng's team relies entirely on two letters from Huawei's U.S. lawyers in which allegations are made, but support for the allegations is redacted and those lawyers are "aligned" with Meng, he said. He added that the U.S. has "vigorously" denied the allegations, so Meng's team is essentially asking the B.C. Supreme Court to weigh one side against the other, a job better suited for the U.S. trial. Frater also accused Meng's team of "jurisdiction shopping" for a court that would approve the document disclosure. Meng's lawyers previously failed in an effort to access the same documents through a court in the United Kingdom. "Having received the answer 'no' from the U.K. court, then my friends went to Hong Kong and inexplicably, HSBC, which was the same litigant that appeared in the court in the U.K., completely reversed its position after having won on every single point in the U.K. court," Frater said. "HSBC for reasons known only to itself turned around and decided to agree to an order." Frater called the adjournment application an "11th hour" request, adding the Hong Kong court provided no timeline for when the documents might be shared with Meng's team. There's no credible basis for an independent investigation and Canada has no duty to investigate the evidence underlying extradition requests made by its treaty partners, he said. The broad public interest in Meng's extradition case only adds to the urgency of wrapping it up, he said. "Extraditions hearings are supposed to be expeditious," Frater said.
