A new photograph has been released of the royal family. The image, taken at a reception held in Buckingham Palace on the eve of the Queen's funeral, shows the new King, the Queen Consort Camilla and William and Catherine, the new Prince and Princess of Wales.
The photograph was taken by longtime royal photographer Chris Jackson, who has lensed countless photographs of the royals, including many taken during the difficult past few weeks, as the family navigated the tragic period of grief and public mourning for the late Queen Elizabeth II.
This freshly released image is one of the first official photographs released by the palace of the new King's reign.
The first image showed King Charles at work with the traditional Red Box – the famous container which holds the papers which are sent to the monarch almost every day. They contain information sent from government ministers in the UK and across the commonwealth. The boxes themselves were introduced on the Queen's coronation in 1953 and the late monarch received them almost every day of her reign, excluding Christmas Day.
This, the family's second officially released photograph, is a meaningful one. It was taken at an extraordinarily poignant time. The Buckingham Palace reception was not only held for visiting dignitaries and world leaders to pay their respects to the late Queen, but it was the first official engagement with global representatives of the King's reign. It was also the night on which the Princess of Wales was tasked with one of her most important first solo engagements in her new role – a private meeting with the First Lady of Ukraine, Olena Zelenska.
King Charles had long been vocal about his desire for a more streamlined monarchy, and this group image is also significant for conveying this message. Showing the King with only his wife, Camilla, the Queen and his heir, William, the Prince of Wales, with his wife Catherine, the Princess of Wales, it shows the core focus of the new royal family will be these two couples. They have already been dubbed the new 'Fab Four' – a name previously given to William, Kate, Harry and Meghan.
