‘Ozark’s’ Final Season to Premiere in January 2022 on Netflix (TV News Roundup)

The final season of “Ozark” will premiere Jan. 21, 2022 on Netflix with its first seven episodes. The second seven-episode half of the season will then follow later in the year.

“Ozark” follows the Byrde family’s criminal enterprise in the Ozarks. As patriarch Marty Byrde (Jason Bateman) put it in the series premiere back in 2017, “Money is, at its essence, that measure of a man’s choices.” That quote is laid over the beginning of a teaser for the final season, implying it will come back to haunt him in the show’s final run.

The final season stars Bateman, Laura Linney, Julia Garner, Sofia Hublitz, Skylar Gaertner, Charlie Tahan, Jessica Frances Dukes, Lisa Emery, Felix Solis, Damian Young, Alfonso Herrera, Adam Rothenberg, John Bedford Lloyd, Joseph Sikora, Bruno Bichir, CC Castillo, Katrina Lenk, Bruce Davison, Ali Stroker and Veronica Falcón. The show is executive produced by Chris Mundy, who also serves as showrunner, Bateman; Mark Williams; John Shiban, Patrick Markey and Bill Dubuque. Linney serves as co-executive producer. The series is from MRC Television.

Hulu released a trailer for Season 2 of “The Great,” which premieres Nov. 19. In the second season, Catherine (Elle Fanning) takes the Russian throne, but the reality of liberating a country that doesn’t want to be may prove more challenging than takin down Peter III (Nicholas Hoult). As she struggles to bring enlightenment to Russia, she also has to contend with the arrival of her mother (Gillian Anderson) and her shifting relationship to her husband. Phoebe Fox, Adam Godley, Gwilym Lee, Charity Wakefield, Douglas Hodge, Sacha Dhawan, Bayo Gbadamosi and Belinda Bromilow also star. Apple TV Plus debuted a trailer for Season 2 of “Snoopy in Space,” premiering on Oct. 19. After exploring the moon and visiting the space station in Season 1, the 12-episode second season will see Snoopy and other “Peanuts” characters on a journey across the universe to find out if there is outside of Earth. The series is executive produced by showrunner Mark Evestaff; Craig Schulz; WildBrain’s Josh Scherba, Anne Loi and Stephanie Betts; and Charles M. Schulz Creative Associates’ Paige Braddock. Comedy Central announced that “Roy Wood Jr.: Imperfect Messenger” will premiere on Oct. 29 at 10:30 p.m. In the comedy special, Wood, a correspondent on “The Daily Show with Trevor Noah,” discusses police and prison reform, the Capitol Riots, Black Brits in Civil Rights movies, white allies and Brazilian butt lifts.

TBS announced that Season 1 of competition series “Wipeout” will return with 10 new episodes on Jan. 11, 2022 at 9 p.m. John Cena and Nicole Byer host along with field host Camille Kostek as contestants complete three-round games including a three-stage obstacle course. Endemol Shine North America produces for TBS with Sharon Levy, DJ Nurre, Shyam Balsé and Keith Geller, Cena, and creator and showrunner Matt Kunitz serving as executive producers.

Fox announced that Gordon Ramsay’s new cooking competition series “Next Level Chef” will premiere on Jan. 2 at 8 p.m. ET / 5 p.m. PT following the NFL doubleheader. The series will see contestants go after a $250,000 prize by cooking on a three-story stage with a clean top floor kitchen and a more difficult basement. Chefs Nyesha Arrington and Richard Blais co-mentor with Ramsay. The series is produced by Fox Alternative Entertainment and Studio Ramsay Global.

Fox also announced that Season 2 of “Call Me Kat” will premiere on Jan. 9 at 8 p.m. ET / 5 p.m. PT following the NFL doubleheader, while “Pivoting” makes its debut Jan. 9 at 8:30 p.m. ET / 5:30 p.m. PT. “Call Me Kat” is based on Miranda Hart’s British series “Miranda” and stars Mayim Bialik as Kat, who uses all her savings to open a cat cafe. Kyla Pratt, Leslie Jordan, Julian Gant, Cheyenne Jackson, Swoosie Kurtz and Christopher Rivas also star. “Call Me Kat” is produced by That’s Wonderful Productions, Sad Clown Productions and BBC Studios in association with Warner Bros. Television and Fox Entertainment. “Pivoting” stars Eliza Coupe, Ginnifer Goodwin and Maggie Q as three longtime friends mourning the death of the fourth member of their group. Tommy Dewey and JT Neal also star. “Pivoting” is written by Liz Astrof and produced by Warner Bros. Television in association with Fox Entertainment.

PROGRAMMING

Lifetime greenlit three new original thrillers set to premiere in 2022. “Single Black Female” will star Raven Goodwin, Amber Riley and K. Michelle in a story about what happens in a new friendship where dark secrets emerge. LeToya Luckett, Kierra Sheard-Kelly, Ta’Rhonda Jones and Drew Sidora will star in “Line Sisters,” which follows four sorority sisters with a deadly secret. “Vanished: Searching for My Sister” stars Justin Bruening, Jasmine Guy and Tatyana Ali, who plays a double role as one twin that goes missing and one twin that will do anything to find her sister.

ACQUISITIONS

The CW announced the acquisition of the Italian drama “Leonardo,” an eight-part series about Leonardo da Vinci’s life, work and personal struggles. Aidan Turner stars as da Vinci alongside Matilda de Angelis as Caterina da Cremona, Freddie Highmore as Stefano Giraldi, Giancarlo Giannini as Andrea del Verrocchio, Carlos Cuevas as Salaì, Alessandro Sperduti as Tommaso Masini, James D’Arcy as Ludovico Sforza, Robin Renucci as Piero da Vinci, Hugo Becker as Thierry, Miriam Dalmazio as Beatrice D’Este and Max Bennet as Cesare Borgia. Frank Spotnitz and Steve Thompson serve as creators with Dan Percival and Alexis Sweet as directors. Executive producers include Luca Bernabei, Daniele Passani, Sara Melodia and Luisa Cotta Ramosino for Lux Vide, Spotnitz and Emily Feller for Big Light Productions, Highmore for Alfresco Pictures and Brendan Fitzgerald for Sony Pictures Television. “Leonardo” is produced by Lux Vide with Rai Fiction and Big Light Productions in association with France Télévisions and RTVE and co-produced and distributed by SPT.

The CW also acquired Australian comedy-drama “Bump,” which follows overachieving 17-year-old Olympia (Nathalie Morris) after she is rushed to the hospital and discovers that she is in labor. The cast also includes Peter Thurnwald Olympia’s boyfriend Lachie, Safia Arain as her best friend Reema, Claudia Karvan as her mother Angie, Angus Samson as her father Dom and Carlos Sanson, Jr. as Santiago Hernandez, the father of Olympia’s baby. “Bump” is created by Karvan and Kelsey Munro and produced by Roadshow Rough Diamond with John Edwards, Dan Edwards and Karvan serving as producers.

DEALS

Trevor Donovan has signed a new overall deal with GAC Media to star in and executive produce original films for the network, Variety has learned exclusively. He will soon appear in “Jingle Bell Christmas,” a holiday film premiering on Dec. 4 as part of GAC Family’s “Great American Christmas” franchise. GAC Family will work to expand Donovan’s previous anti-bullying work, which includes a nationwide campaign in partnership with the Ad Council.

CASTING

Katie Krause has been named as a digital and on-air correspondent for “Extra” and will work to grow the brand’s digital presence. She joins “Extra” after seven years of serving as a senior digital producer and correspondent for “Entertainment Tonight,” where she focused on music, television and young Hollywood.

LATE NIGHT

Nick Offerman and Charlamagne Tha God will appear on “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert,” while Hailee Steinfeld, Lee Pace and Coldplay will appear on “The Late Late Show with James Corden.”
