Overnight thunderstorms possible; stronger storms expected Friday in Kansas City: NWS

Thunderstorms were possible overnight as Kansas City was expected to see stronger storms by Friday afternoon, the National Weather Service said Thursday.

Storms coming from eastern Kansas and western Missouri were expected to land sometime between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. Friday and then move to the east. Potential hazards included hail and strong winds earlier on as the greatest threat of severe weather was predicted east of Interstate 35.

Wind gusts of 45 miles per hour are likely, the weather service said, and some may exceed 50 miles per hour.

In some areas, warmer and drier conditions paired with strong winds create a fire hazard. The National Weather Service issued a Red Flag Warning through Friday, saying any fires that begin could spread quickly.

Kansas Citians saw the first wave of high wind Thursday as the National Weather Service issued a wind advisory for the metro. Gusts were predicted to clock in around 40 to 45 miles per hour by Thursday evening.
