Our Guide to the Flurry of Underground 'Frozen' Merchandise
The official stats on Frozen are staggering: More than six months since the release of the animated avalanche, it’s surpassed $1.2 billion in worldwide box office, and become the fifth-highest-grossing movie ever. But the film’s haul isn’t limited to box-office returns. There are best-selling Frozen tie-in books, a smash soundtrack album, and a forthcoming live-action tour.
The colossal popularity of Frozen has even hatched its own online economy, where everything from crochet dolls to tattoos is on display and on sale. Here are some of the notable goodies for the Elsa and Anna obsessive in your life who just won’t let it go:
Frozen mashups
Combining Frozen with other pop culture supernova is a go-to gimmick among creators, resulting in such designs as “Frozen Kombat,” above right. And if Kombat’s not your bag, then can we interest you in Hello Elsa?
Frozen brand everything
From hand sanitizers to party invitations, there isn’t a product that you can’t slap a Frozen tag on. “Every kid now wants a Frozen party,” says DigiPartyShoppe owner Jennifer, whose selection of frosty wares includes water bottle labels marked “Melted Snow.”
Cosplay couture
The Disney Store was forced to put strict limits on the number of Elsa and Anna kid costumes that parents can buy. But what about frocks for the grownups? You can get those now, including Anna wigs and Elsa dresses.
Edible Olafs
You’ll never be able to eat your way through all the Frozen-themed baked goods out there, but if you want to try, we suggest starting with some snowman cookies.
Ear warmer
When the temperature dips below 32 degrees, your jaunty wool Anna cap will be serenading you from the closet.
Keeping you in cross-stitches
Embroider your way back to Arendelle with a cross-stitch template of our enchanted ladies.
Frozen fingers
Because nothing says “sexy” like Disney characters adhered to long French-manicured acrylics.
Adele Dazeem forever
John Travolta (mis)spoke and enterprising sellers listened. “We knew that we had a brilliant T-shirt idea on our hands,” says Rocky Smith, who sells through his KellonDesigns handle. “I thought once the Oscars had passed and the initial rush of orders came in, the hype would die down. Yet, to my surprise, we still receive orders!”
Frozen tatts
Okay, so tattoos are not merchandise, but there’s a surprising variety of Frozen body art out there. Kristen Hughes, who runs @disneytatts on Instagram got her tattoo in December for her birthday. “My Disney tattoo page gets Frozen tattoos weekly,” she says. “They are a lot more popular than Brave or Tangled.”
