It may have come two months late, but this year’s Oscar night is finally around the corner.

The film industry’s most prestigious awards ceremony is set to go ahead on Sunday, 25 April, with films including Minari, Nomadland, Judas and the Black Messiah and Promising Young Woman poised to compete for top honours on the night.

Last year’s Oscars culminated with surprise wins for Bong Joon Ho’s Parasite, which took home Best Picture, Best Director and Best Screenplay, beating 1917 and JoJo Rabbit to the top spot.

For obvious reasons, this year’s Oscar ceremony will be an unusual one, with many of the nominated films still yet to be released in the UK. Most of those that were released came out directly on streaming services.

The results are still up in the air, though if you believe the bookmakers, several categories already have sure favourites. The recent Bafta wins for Nomadland, for example, mean many are favouring Chloe Zhou’s life-on-the-fringes drama as the likely choice for Best Picture.

The late Chadwick Boseman has long been floated as this year’s probable Best Actor winner for his work in the August Wilson play adaptation Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, though Sir Anthony Hopkins’ recent Bafta victory for poignant drama The Father has lead some to suggest he could be on his way to a shock second Oscar win.

Two-time Oscar winner Frances McDormand is vying for number three for her lead role in Nomadland, though faces stiff competition from Viola Davis, Andra Day, Vanessa Kirby and Carey Mulligan, who is the group’s nominal favourite.
