Ontario is reporting 795 new cases of COVID-19 and five more deaths, with Waterloo Region announcing Friday that a child under 10 had died with the virus.

Dr. Hsiu-Li Wang, the region's medical officer of health, said the child had underlying health conditions and there were no school or child-care setting exposures related to the case.

Wang said the death is a rare, tragic circumstance and a reminder of how serious the virus is.

Premier Doug Ford shared condolences with the family on Friday. Christine Elliott, Ontario's minister of health, tweeted that the death was "a heartbreaking loss."

There are currently 336 people hospitalized and 194 people in an intensive care unit (ICU) due to a COVID-related illness, according to the province.

The seven-day average is now at 724, lower than last week's figure on the same day, when it was 729.

Of the 726 cases today with a known vaccination status:

  • 460 were in those unvaccinated.

  • 53 had a single dose.

  • 213 had two doses.

The province's raw data on the vaccination status of cases does not include breakdowns by age. That, and the fact that the populations of vaccinated and unvaccinated people in Ontario differ greatly by both size and demographics, are important caveats to note.

Of the 176 people who are hospitalized with a known vaccination status, 136 are unvaccinated, 10 had one dose of the vaccine and 30 had two doses. For the 142 people in an ICU with a known vaccination status, 120 are unvaccinated, 9 had one dose and 13 had two doses.

Here are some other key pandemic indicators and figures from the Ministry of Health's daily provincial update:

Tests completed in the last 24 hours: 33,763

Provincewide test positivity rate: 2.4 per cent

Active cases: 6,239

Patients in ICU with COVID-related illnesses: 194

Deaths: Five, pushing the total to 9,637

Vaccinations: 21,318,465 doses have been administered to date. Nearly 85 per cent of Ontarians aged 12 years or older have now received at least one dose of a vaccine, while 78.7 per cent have received two doses.
