Ontario's new daily COVID-19 cases continue to drop below 1,700

Ontario reported 1,670 new cases of COVID-19 on Wednesday, including 450 cases in Toronto, 342 in Peel, 171 in York Region and 128 in Niagara.

The province completed 55,191 tests in the past day, with 46,900 tests currently under investigation. The positivity rate in Ontario totalled four per cent on Wednesday, down from 4.9 per cent a week earlier.

On Tuesday, the province reported 1,740 new COVID-19 cases, with new cases consistently over 2,000 between Jan. 20 and Jan. 24. The last time new cases were over 3,000 a day was Jan. 17.

Ontario also confirmed 49 more COVID-19 deaths, bringing the total to 5,958. There are currently 1,382 in Ontario hospitals with COVID-19, including 377 in ICUs and 291 people on a ventilator.

A total of 238 long-term care homes have a reported outbreak, which includes 1,039 active resident cases and 974 active staff cases.

While Canada continues to manage a temporary delay in deliveries of the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine doses, as of Wednesday evening 305,330 doses of COVID-19 vaccine were administered.

On Tuesday, Ontario announced that 2.26 per cent of travellers who volunteered for the COVID-19 testing program at Toronto Pearson International Airport tested positive for the virus. This comes as Ontario Premier Doug Ford calls on the federal government to implement COVID-19 testing up on arrival and a temporary ban on flights coming from countries where new COVID-19 variants are being detected.
