Online Campaign For Elsa To Be Gay In Frozen 2

An online campaign has been launched to find Elsa from ‘Frozen’ a girlfriend for the forthcoming sequel.

Though it’s likely that Disney already has a plot in mind for part two, it hasn’t stopped the hashtag #GiveElsaAGirlfriend going viral.

- Space Jam 2 in the pipeline

Twitter user and MTV writer Alexis Isabel ushered in the notion, writing: “I hope Disney makes Elsa a lesbian princess imagine how iconic that would be.”

A direct request to Disney has so far been retweeted over 1500 times.

And the idea has received stacks of support from other users too, some even mocking up what such a relationship might look like.

Elsa and her sister Anna were the stars of the record-breaking 2013 movie, inspired by Hans Christian Anderson’s tale 'The Snow Queen’.

The movie was hailed for its supposed message of feminism, despite Anna’s character spending a sizeable chunk of the film dreaming (and singing) about finding a husband.

But still, its message of sisterhood remains an enduring one, with plans for a sequel announced in March this year.

Asked last month if she’d started recording yet, Kristen Bell, who played Anna, said: “Not yet. We’re just about to. They’ve just written it and they’re still doing tweaks, but I think we should be recording this month.

“The story is great, and they exude quality… It took them a while because they wanted to figure out what story they needed to tell and what would be important and engaging and I think they found it.”

Whether that story is creating the first gay Disney Princess is not yet known.

But there has been a school of thought which places Elsa as having an undertone of homosexuality to her character.

Addressing the talk, director Jennifer Lee told the Big Issue: “We know what we made. But at the same time I feel like once we hand the film over, it belongs to the world, so I don’t like to say anything, and let the fans talk. I think it’s up to them.”

'Frozen 2’ will arrive in 2018.
