The One Show's Alex Jones returned to the show from maternity leave last night (October 21) – only to break the set minutes into the programme.

The presenter has been away from the BBC series since August, and gave birth to her daughter Annie later the same month.

In yesterday's episode, Alex was welcomed back to the show by co-host Harry Judd for a special fundraising episode ahead of BBC Children in Need.

Alex was raving about Harry's choice of words, saying: "I love the word 'panache'!" before leaning on the edge of the sofa, causing it to detach from the part she was sitting on.

"The sofa has come apart," she laughed. "I'm back for two seconds! Sorry."

"It's her first show back. Apologies," Harry responded, also giggling about the moment.

As they tried to introduce Strictly Come Dancing judge Bruno Tonioli, Alex tried hard to keep it together but she couldn't help tying her mishap in with the introduction.

"This is going to be brilliant now, because in fact he's so enthusiastic he's often a danger to himself," she said.

In a video reel of Bruno's antics on Strictly, a number of clips showed the judge getting so excited about the dances that he fell off his chair. "Well I can talk, can't I," Alex quipped.

Later in the episode, Alex and Harry interviewed Countdown star Susie Dent and Gyles Brandreth, who co-host the podcast Something Rhymes with Purple.

This time, Alex was sat on a different sofa, but still managed to accidentally break the end off while she was trying to interview the guests.

"Oh gosh, I've broken this side now," she laughed. "What's going on?"

"Are you going to pick it up and throw it at me?" Gyles joked.

She responded: "They've changed the sets, some cheap set's come in. Look, it breaks!"

The One Show airs weekdays at 7pm on BBC One.
