We’ve all been there late at night before a much longed for holiday, trying to squeeze one last outfit into an overflowing suitcase. That ‘just in case’ dress, for when you happen to be invited to a glamorous party or, an extra option for the beach. I have been so guilty of this in the past, only to be caught out at check in where once again, I am over the limit.

However, this summer’s travel chaos has forced me to rethink and to really make my dresses work for all occasions. This can be done with the right accessories; that one pair of fabulous espadrilles with a dash of lipstick, which can take you from a poolside sun lounger to sundown cocktails with ease.

I love wearing lightweight cotton in the heat and I especially love dresses with a hand blocked print for summer holidays, as bright colours and patterns come alive in the Mediterranean sun.

I look for slightly oversized styles that you can pull over a swimsuit for the daytime but then cinch in with a belt for a more pulled together look for the evening. These cotton dresses are also easy to pack by rolling them neatly and then put on a coathanger immediately on arrival.

I use Brolli’s deCrease Travel Iron Free spray (£9.99, victoriahealth.com) to give my dresses a refresh between wears and a good airing outside. Alternatively, you can hang them in the bathroom before having a hot shower, and the steam will make any creases disappear.

My tips for a travel-friendly capsule wardrobe

  • Pack a few accessories in similar colours so you can easily match with each dress

  • A fabric belt is lightweight to carry and can transform a dress for the evening

  • Roll your swimwear into the base of your hat to protect it in your suitcase

  • A small bag for the evening instantly adds glamour

  • Coloured sunglasses are an easy way to lift a low-key look

  • Go bolder than usual with your nail colour for an instant holiday dopamine hit
