Currency market rocked by tariff, DeepSeek concerns
TOKYO/GDANSK (Reuters) -The dollar firmed against major currencies on Tuesday on new U.S. tariff threats, giving traders little time to catch their breath after Monday's big risk-off moves sparked by the emergence of a low-cost Chinese artificial intelligence model. Any market relief that President Donald Trump had stopped short of hiking tariffs on U.S. trading partners immediately after taking office last week has quickly faded. Trump said on Monday he planned to impose tariffs on imported computer chips, pharmaceuticals and steel in an effort to persuade the producers to make them in the United States.

Fighting rages in Congo's Goma while embassies attacked in capital
Dead bodies lay in the streets, gunfire rang out and hospitals were overwhelmed in east Congo's largest city on Tuesday, as M23 rebels backed by Rwanda faced pockets of resistance from army and pro-government militias. A day after the rebels marched into the lakeside city, protesters in the capital attacked a U.N. compound and embassies including those of Rwanda, France and the United States, expressing anger at what they said was foreign interference. M23 fighters entered Goma on Monday in the worst escalation since 2012 of a three-decade conflict rooted in the long fallout from the Rwandan genocide and control of Congo's abundant mineral resources.

Dozens of demonstrators attacked several foreign embassies, including those of Rwanda, France and Belgium, on Tuesday demanding that they oppose the advance of Rwanda-backed M23 rebels into a major city in the country’s conflict-battered east. Congo’s security forces were attempting to slow the rebels, who advanced into Goma, a key eastern city, in a major escalation of the decadeslong conflict. The M23 rebels are one of about 100 armed groups vying for a foothold in the mineral-rich region in the conflict, one of Africa’s largest.

Share markets steady in nervy trading after DeepSeek selloff
U.S. stock futures and European shares steadied on Tuesday, after the previous day's dramatic, tech-led selloff, and traders walked back some moves to safe-haven government bonds, though investors across asset classes remained jittery. Behind the rout was the emergence of a low-cost Chinese artificial intelligence model, DeepSeek, that made investors question the dominance of AI bellwethers and their suppliers, which have sent shares of tech companies and chip firms soaring. In a sign that Tuesday might be a little calmer, Nvidia rose around 5% in premarket trading, Nasdaq futures were 0.5% higher, and European tech stocks gained 1%.
