We all know that Lovato is a singer, actress, and overall confident woman, but what not everyone knows about the “Sorry Not Sorry” songstress is that she practices Brazilian jujitsu to stay fit. Bad. Ass.
Lovato trains at Jay Glazer’s Unbreakable Performance Center in LA, and has been working with Glazer for more than a year now. In that time, she’s trained with MMA superstars like Chuck Liddell and Randy Couture. Last August, she proudly shared on Instagram that she earned a blue belt, the second of seven levels.
The pop star has been open about her depression, eating disorders, self-harm, bullying, bipolar disorder, and addictions. She credits jujitsu for keeping her in shape both physically and mentally. In her YouTube documentary Demi Lovato: Simply Complicated, she shared that “the gym really helps, and I know that I would be in a very dark place without it.”
So what exactly is Brazilian jujitsu? It’s a form of martial arts that teaches you self-defense using techniques based on grappling and joint locks. Ninety percent of jujitsu fights take place on the floor, so the method focuses on ground fighting and submission techniques, using joint locks and chokeholds. But it’s not all just about the fighting — it’s also about character-building and improving yourself.
Lovato says she loves jujitsu because it never gets boring. There is always a new move to try and always new people to train with. “When you’re rolling with somebody, you’re constantly thinking of defending or attacking moves, so it’s kind of meditative in a way, but it’s also a great workout when you’re training,” Lovato told PopSugar.
With all this training, Lovato may not need too much of a security team during her offseason.
Looks like Lovato is living her best life both on and off of the mat. You go, girl!
