The Nun II director Michael Chaves has revealed how the new film's ending connects to the rest of The Conjuring franchise.

The sequel is set four years after the events of the first film and a decade before the events of The Conjuring, seeing the aftermath of Frenchie's (Jonas Bloquet) possession by the demonic entity Valak. Frenchie is also revealed to be Maurice, who dies after a failed exorcism in the first Conjuring movie.

However, as The Nun 2 ends with Frenchie/Maurice being saved, fans have been left confused as to how he ends up possessed again nearly 10 years later.

Speaking to Collider, Chaves addressed the apparent plot hole, explaining both Maurice's demise and Valek's reappearance.

"There's a moment at the end of the movie where — well, there's a couple of moments; there's a mid-credit that might tease something," he said.

"Obviously, in the timeline of The Conjuring, we think he's saved at the end of this movie, but we know that later on, before the events of the first Conjuring, but after this movie, he is possessed and it's a failed exorcism that leads to him taking his life. So, we know that's coming."

Chaves added: "Now, Valak either gets back into him or Valak might still be in there, and I think that's really open to interpretation."

The Nun II credit scene Chaves referred to features a brief appearance from demonologists Ed and Lorraine Warren receiving a phone call from Father Gordon about another paranormal case — further tying the film into the rest of the franchise.

This isn't the first time Chaves has spoken about links between films, with the director previously telling SFX Magazine that he hoped The Nun II would help fill out a "bigger canvas".

The Nun II is out now in cinemas.
