L'Oreal CEO sets cautious tone on China
L'Oreal's chief executive gave a cautious outlook about China, the world's No. 2 beauty market, on Thursday even after the cosmetics maker reported first-quarter sales growth of more than 6% for the country. The first-quarter performance in China was well above sector growth of 1%, Nicolas Hieronimus told analysts in a call after the French cosmetics giant that owns the Maybelline and Lancome brands released better-than-expected first-quarter sales. "We plan with, I would say, a China that is not doing fantastic, and we make the most of the opportunities in Europe, in emerging (markets) and gaining share in North America," he said.

TREASURIES-Yields rise near 5-month highs after jobless claims data, TIPS auction strong
U.S. Treasury yields hovered near their highest levels since November on Thursday as investors weighed steady labor market data and warnings from Federal Reserve officials that the decline in inflation may have stalled. Yields have jumped near five-month highs this week following stronger-than-expected inflation data last week. Markets are now pricing in a total of 42 basis points in cuts by the end of this year, down from more than 160 basis points in cuts expected in January, and now see the first cut coming in September, according to CME's FedWatch Tool.

In a bid to increase revenue to pay for housing and other programs, Canada's annual budget on Tuesday proposed increasing the share of capital gains that is subject to taxation to two-thirds from one-half for people with annual investment profits greater than C$250,000 ($181,752) as well as for companies and trusts. Raising capital gains taxes could discourage savings, say economists, a key driver of business investment, which fell in the fourth quarter for the sixth time in the last seven quarters and has been unable to sustain a move above the 2014 peak.
