Noah Thompson Is the Winner of 'American Idol' 2022 and HunterGirl Fans Are Devastated

With great excitement, Ryan Seacrest announced the results at the American Idol's 2022 season finale — and your next American Idol is Noah Thompson!

The latest installment of the ABC singing competition show concluded Sunday night with a burst of confetti when Noah was crowned the winner of American Idol season 5 (overall 20th season). But before hearing the highly anticipated results, fans at home were treated to lively performances from previous AI contestants and guest artists, including Ben Platt, Sara Bareilles and Michael Buble. In the end, Noah earned the most real-time votes during Sunday night's finale, coming ahead of finalists HunterGirl and Leah Marlene.

Folks who tuned in watched Noah take the stage throughout the night. A standout moment was when Noah performed his single "One Day Tonight," though he also stunned everyone with his rendition of Bruce Springsteen's "On Fire." Unsurprising, he received great feedback from American Idol judges Lionel Richie, Katy Perry and Luke Bryan.

In the weeks leading up to American Idol’s 2022 finale, Noah proved to be a worthy opponent with his powerful voice. At the auditions, Noah blew everyone away with his rendition of "Giving You Up" by Kameron Marlowe. But it was only the beginning for the aspiring singer who continuously stepped up to the challenge at every round. Most notably, fans remember his unique take on Rihanna's "Stay," a risky choice that both shocked and amazed the judges at the time.

Unsurprisingly, Noah won the hearts of many and they threw their support behind him when he was declared the winner. "Yessssss!!! Way to go Noah," wrote one person on Twitter. "I'm so happy right now ... Great job Noah!!!!! @noahthompsonmu1 You have a great voice and I'm so glad you won," another gushed.

That said, Huntergirl's fans were understandably upset over the results and immediately took to Twitter to express their disappointment. "No way Huntergirl lost to Noah….I refuse to believe it!," one fan tweeted. "HUNTERGIRL WAS ROBBED," another declared. "Really? IMO Hunter Girl was so much better!" someone else said.

While there can only be one American Idol winner, this doesn’t mean that Huntergirl won't go on to be successful in her own right. As fans can recall, many former contestants — such as Adam Lambert, Chris Daughtry and Jennifer Hudson — have soared to stardom despite not winning first place.

But tonight, all eyes are on Noah – and we hope he's taking it all in. We can't wait to see what both of these incredible artists do next.
