NOAA Plane Travels Through the Eye of Hurricane Ian

An NOAA plane traveled through the eye of Hurricane Ian in the Caribbean on Tuesday, September 27, as the hurricane was over Cuba.

Cuba lost power in an island-wide blackout on Tuesday after the storm hit. The National Hurricane Center said Hurricane Ian battered the island’s west with high winds and a life-threatening storm surge.

By Wednesday, September 28, the National Hurricane Center said Ian had strengthened into an extremely dangerous Category 4 hurricane. Life-threatening storm surges, catastrophic winds and flooding were expected for Florida. Credit: Nick Underwood/NOAA via Storyful
