Kansas Citians love their sports teams and are attached to the arenas where those teams play.
When team owners talk about upgrading those venues or building new ones, loyal fans are bound to have a keen interest in knowing what the home of their home team is going to look like.
Talk of renovating or building a new sports facility in Kansas City is bound to be followed by a spate of renderings showing conceptual designs for those venues. The owners of the Kansas City Royals are the most recent local team to seriously contemplate a new stadium.
Kansas City sports fans may get more than their share of looks at ideas for state of the art sporting facilities due to the city’s claim on being the sports architecture capital of the world. Many of the world’s most iconic sports venues were designed by architecture firms based in Kansas City.
The most recent Kansas City venue idea is one for a downtown baseball stadium that would occupy the space that is now home to the former Kansas City Star printing plant at McGee Street and Truman Road. Renderings show the modern stadium spanning I-670 and becoming part of the South Loop Link, a planned green space that would cap the interstate highway that defines the southern edge of the downtown loop.
The concept is just one of a handful of designs and locations that have been imagined for a downtown baseball venue.
Dreaming of a new stadium is easy compared to the political wrangling and finding the funds to get one built. The Star’s archive is loaded with a plethora of renderings for the various professional sports venues in Kansas City. Some of those renderings are images that appear close to the actual finished projects. Most of them though are concepts that for a myriad of reasons were never green lighted for construction.
Here are a few noteworthy stadium design ideas. Some of them completed, and some that didn’t make the cut.
Several London Underground stations are closed due to workers striking while two Tube lines were halted because of a casualty on the track. Transport for London marked five stations as closed on the network at 10.30am on Friday due to the Transport Salaried Staffs' Association action. The union said the action was likely to cause Tube stations to close at the last minute, including into Saturday morning, but Transport for London said there will not be significant disruption.
Daimler Truck must reach a new labor contract with over 7,300 hourly workers at six facilities in the U.S. South by the end of Friday or face a possible strike by the United Auto Workers (UAW) union members. The workers are seeking higher pay, institution of cost-of-living adjustments and greater job security from the heavy-truck maker, UAW President Shawn Fain said during an online speech earlier this week. "Workers' wages at Daimler have not kept up," he said on Tuesday.

Exxon Mobil Corp on Friday missed analysts' estimates with a 28% year-on-year drop in first quarter profits as weaker refining margins and lower natural gas prices offset volume gains. The largest U.S. oil company, which is in the process of closing a $60 billion deal for top shale oil producer Pioneer Natural Resources, posted first-quarter earnings of $8.22 billion, or $2.06 per share, compared to an $11.43 billion net profit a year ago. The results were the second highest for a first quarter in the past decade, behind the year-ago period, said Chief Financial Officer Kathryn Mikells.
Shareholders of Baloise on Friday voted to scrap a 2% ceiling on voting rights at the Swiss insurer, dealing a blow to the company's board, which had opposed it. The proposal, which needed a three-quarter majority to pass, received 78.2% of shareholder votes at Baloise's annual general meeting in the northern city of Basel. Shareholders at present have no more than 2% of votes, irrespective of the size of their stake, meaning that major investors like BlackRock or UBS cannot fully bring their weight to bear on decision-making.
The U.S. government's auto safety agency is investigating whether last year's recall of Tesla's Autopilot driving system did enough to make sure drivers pay attention to the road. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says in documents posted on its website Friday that it has concerns about the December recall of more than 2 million vehicles. The agency pushed the company to do the recall after a two-year investigation into Autopilot's driver monitoring system, which measures torque on the steering wheel from a driver's hands.
Building a good pension takes a lifetime of hard work, so ensuring you are making the most of every pound is essential. Last year, HMRC overtaxed pensioners by a record £200m.
